OKC Streetcar Route Moves Forward 5 to 3

Our organization would like to thank the many supporters online and the many people who came out to the City Council meeting today!  The modern streetcar route passed 5 to 3!

WHAT A GREAT DAY FOR OKC!

We particularly want to thank Councilman John A. Pettis Jr. of Ward 7 for sticking with us and holding his ground against extraordinary pressure from all directions.

For our Mayor Cornett and his leadership, Council members Patrick Ryan, David Greenwell, Larry McAtee.

We know that we had Councilwoman Salyer's support and completely appreciate the reasons for her recusing from the vote.

THIS IS A POINT OF DEMARCATION FOR THE STREETCAR PROJECT.

Here is a link to pieces of the streetcar animation

and a link to the streetcar route video

An article in newsok about the vote.

We are absolutely thrilled to move forward into engineering and technology decisions!

Many thanks again for your support for our OKC streetcar,

CITY OF OKC REQUESTS LETTERS OF INTEREST FROM STREETCAR VENDORS

PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND SUMMARY OF SCOPE

The City of Oklahoma City (the "City") has approved funding for a $130 million modern streetcar project. Phase 1 of the project is valued at approximately $104 million and is anticipated to be fully funded in the second quarter of 2014. Funding comes from a City sales tax initiative, which began collecting revenue in April 2010.

Phase 1 of the project includes the following:

  •  A maintenance facility

  • 4 to 5 miles of track

  • 6 heated and air-conditioned modern-style streetcars (operating up to 18 hours per day)

  •
  • Phase 2 includes additional track and likely two additional cars and is scheduled to begin construction in the first quarter of 2019. It, too, will be fully locally funded at that time.

  •

    OBJECTIVE

  •

The Oklahoma City community's preference would be for the streetcar to have as little overhead catenary as possible or alternatively to have no catenary at all. This Request for Letters of Interest is seeking vendors who can provide modern streetcars which run either partially or totally off-wire. As part of any response, please describe the nature of the technology proposed and examples, if any, of successful implementations of that technology.

  •

The City will also entertain interest from vendors who would be willing to engage in a Research and Development effort to either improve upon existing technology or to develop new technology which would minimize or eliminate on-wire propulsion. Any expression of interest to engage in a Research and Development effort must demonstrate the vendor's proven ability to conduct such an effort and identify any monetary subsidy which might be required for the Research and Development effort. An estimate of the time required to complete such a Research and Development effort should be included.

  •

The City may, in its sole discretion, request in-person interviews from any or all respondents.

  •

Letters of Interest are due no later than 2:00 p.m. on November 1, 2013, to David E. Todd, MAPS Program Manager, 420 W. Main St., Suite 400, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73102.

  •

All questions must be submitted no later than October 18, 2013. Questions must be addressed by email to Nicolle Goodman at ngoodman@adgokc.com with the words "Modern Streetcar Letter of Interest" in the subject line. To be included in responses to questions from other vendors, please send an email indicating your interest in responding to this request no later than October 18, 2013.

About the Modern Transit Project

The Modern Transit Project began as a campaign to advocate for the inclusion of rail and intermodal hub initiatives into the proposed MAPS 3 program.  With the successful inclusion of the streetcar and intermodal hub $130 million budget, MTP organized formally as a political committee to assist with efforts to pass the initiative via the December 9, 2009 public vote.  Records of campaign expenditures associated with this effort are available through the City Clerk's office.

The Modern Transit Project now exists as a volunteer organization with minimal direct contributions made by individual members and the Board of Advisers for individual educational outreach about MAPS 3 and complimentary transit initiatives.

The volunteers meet twice monthly.  Guests are always welcome.  Contact the volunteers at info@mtpokc.com
