Emergency meal deliveries help seniors recovering from disaster
Kosher Meals on Wheels regularly helps seniors who have ongoing impairments and limitations. However, sometimes the program addresses a temporary problem, thereby positively impacting the quality of life for seniors faced with a challenging situation.

This past October, KMOW coordinator Sara received a call from an 84-year-old woman who explained that she and her husband, 95 years old and cognitively impaired, were in such a bind.
The couple reside in a historic apartment building that frequently floods whenever there is heavy rain. In September and October there were several severe storms that virtually destroyed their kitchen. They were unable to use their appliances and faced months of renovation before the wife could prepare meals again. What made it especially difficult was that the wife had limited ability to go out and purchase prepared food, since she was the sole caregiver for her husband.

When JFS enrolled the couple in KMOW, they were pleased with both the convenience and the quality of the meals. Last week, Sara received a call from the wife, cheerfully informing her that their kitchen had been restored, and that they no longer needed the meals. She expressed their gratitude for how helpful the Kosher Meals on Wheels program had been at a particularly trying time in their lives.

The KMOW program is always looking for volunteer drivers as well, especially substitute drivers who can be on call for last minute emergencies. Please contact Volunteer Coordinator Michelle at MichelleB@jfsmiddlesex.org or call 732-777-1940. Thank you!
JFS is hiring part-time drivers to help transport senior adults to medical appointments and agency events, as well as to help with Kosher Meals on Wheels deliveries. Please visit our employment opportunities page for more information; email office@jfsmiddlesex.org for questions or to apply.
