Insights on the Inner Depths as Classes Begin
NY Times columnist David Brooks, in his recent piece "The Man Who Found His Inner Depths," spoke about writer Frederick Buechner and his focus on walking through challenges in order to find one's life and truth. Said Buechner:
"Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and the pain of it no less than the excitement and the gladness: tough, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace."
Today's students rarely receive a moment to stop and listen to their lives -- but coaching can provide just that. In a coaching meeting, phones take a back seat, and powerful questions invite a student to think, listen, and make choices based on what they hear from within. Brooks notes that Buechner observed:
"You find your vocation at the spot where your deep gladness meets the world's deep need."
As they listen to questions from a coach, consider what brings them happiness, and seek to define and fulfill their purpose, students can move ever closer to the areas of study and work that will propel them toward a meaningful future.
