Shine On: Brand Reveal Gala | September 14th

We are thrilled to announce that Sonshine Community Services embarked on an exciting rebranding journey since 2022 that will be unveiled this year! Sonshine will undergo a refreshing transformation, complete with a new name and a fresh look. We aim to capture the essence of the organization, honor our history and enhance our future with the name and brand changes.

With a strong dedication to enhancing our services and making a greater impact on the lives of those in need, our team has been working tirelessly to develop a renewed vision that aligns with our mission of fostering positive change for women and children facing domestic violence.

While we can't disclose the specifics just yet, we are eagerly looking forward to sharing our revitalized identity and new initiatives at our celebratory gala at the King Eddy on September 14th. Stay tuned for an exciting announcement that will mark the next chapter in our organization's journey of making a difference.

Brightening Lives with School Supplies

In the spirit of compassion and community, Na'amat Canada Calgary recently embarked on their annual mission to support children in need through their School Supplies for Kids program. On June 11th, they once again extended a helping hand to Sonshine by donating 45 backpacks filled with essential school supplies, equipping the children here with the tools they need to excel in their education and embrace a brighter future. We were so thrilled to receive this wonderful donation, thank you so much Na'amat!



Staff Highlight: Chef Melissa Bakovic

Meet Chef Melissa Bakovic, the driving force behind our culinary endeavours at Sonshine on behalf of the Children's Centre. With a background as a Red Seal Chef and years of experience in the food and hospitality industry, Melissa brings expertise and passion to her role.

In a recent interview, Melissa shared her favourite aspects of working at Sonshine. She expressed the immense joy she experiences through interactions with the children, the collaborative spirit among the staff, and the flexibility her role offers. Melissa's enthusiasm for her work is contagious, and her unwavering commitment to the children's welfare truly makes her an invaluable member of our team.

The Therapeutic Power of Sonshine's Sensory Room

At Sonshine's Children's Centre, we believe in the power of early intervention and holistic development. One of our standout features is our state-of-the-art sensory room, designed to facilitate sensory integration and regulation. This room provides a safe and stimulating space where children can explore their senses and develop crucial skills.

The sensory room offers numerous benefits, including improved attention, concentration, and emotional well-being. It also encourages creativity, cognitive development, and social connections among children. By harnessing the power of sensory integration, we empower children to overcome challenges and thrive in their journey towards healthy and positive futures.

Supporting Survivors of Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence

On June 6th, Sonshine staff attended Women’s Shelter’s Canada’s “Supporting Survivors of Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence” Webinar Training. The webinar shed light on the growing dangers of digitally enhanced violence, a disturbing trend in our increasingly connected world. It explored the ways in which technology can be misused as a tool to perpetrate violence, particularly targeting women and marginalized communities.

Sonshine's participation in this webinar training further strengthens our commitment to empowering survivors and creating a safer and more inclusive society. By staying informed and proactively addressing the challenges of digitally enhanced violence, we strive to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those affected by this growing issue.

Birdies For Kids

Don't forget about Birdies! The Birdies for Kids program, in partnership with the Shaw Charity Classic, is quickly approaching its deadline. From now until August 31st, every dollar you donate will be generously matched by Shaw (up to 50%).

Your support will directly benefit Sonshine's Children's Centre programming, which includes vital healing activities and facilities like sensory rooms, play therapy, sand therapy, and counselling.

Together, we can empower children to reach their fullest potential and provide them with the support they deserve.
