More Than Just a Volunteer...
The  YPIE's Shining Stars section of our newsletter is a place we highlight our outstanding volunteers and the students they work with.  Please enjoy this series of amazing "mission moments!"  If you would like to get involved with YPIE and make a difference in the life of a student, please visit ypie.org/volunteer.
Meet Judy Seiff

"Over the years we have found more than just a volunteer in Judy, but a friend. She has gone above and beyond for all of our senior class."
-Aneesa & Joseph, 2017 seniors, Saunders Trades and Technical High School.

Meet YPIE volunteer extraordinaire, Judy Seiff!  Residing in Westchester County with her husband, Judy has felt privileged that her two daughters were able to attend Edgemont's public schools, one of the top districts in New York State. Recognizing her good fortune motivates Judy to give back to students in Yonkers who do not have the same opportunities.

She serves on Edgemont's Board of Education and has been volunteering with YPIE almost since the College Center at Saunders Trades and Technical High School opened eight years ago.  Over the years, Judy's commitment to Yonkers' students has grown astronomically - sometimes devoting more than ten hours per week to helping Saunders students with their college essays and applications.

Regeneron STEM Institute
YPIE has partnered with Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to launch the Regeneron STEM Institute, a rigorous program for Yonkers high school students who have shown a serious commitment to the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).  The three-year program, which will result in SUNY college credit for participants, officially began on the evening of May 30th with a kickoff for the seventeen accepted YPIE STEM Scholars and their families.
"The 'Eureka!' moment associated with science research is the main reason why I took an interest in science in the first place," said Emily Daly, newly accepted YPIE STEM Scholar. "What interests me the most about science research is all of the possibilities.  There are no limits on what can be researched and what can be discovered through research, and I hope that one day I can help to find discoveries that stretch to the limit."

Yonkers Partners in Education is proud to join in the nationwide effort to promote STEM education and invest in young people as a way to advance our nation in a competitive global environment.  "In a school district with more than 28,000 students and very limited resources, it is incredible to see these talented and deserving students receive the support they need to explore their passion for the sciences," said Wendy Nadel, YPIE's Executive Director. "I am excited to see what the future holds for our students when given the opportunity to reach their full potential."

End of Year Celebrations
YPIE Scholars & YPIE Fellows wrapped up the 2016-17 academic year with a bang.  Our End-of-Year celebrations are an important way  to build our community of students and volunteers and celebrate their successes.

YPIE Honors First Graduating Class of YPIE Scholars 2017

YPIE honored our first graduating class of YPIE Scholars at an inspiring  graduation celebration at the Yonkers Riverfront Library.  Students, families, volunteer Graduation Coaches and community supporters gathered to mark the successful completion of the four year program and celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating class.  Click here to view more photos from the event and watch a powerful speech given by YPIE Scholar and Riverside High School Valedictorian, Samantha Mensah.

YPIE Scholars 2019 & 2024 End-of-Year BBQ

YPIE Scholars & Graduation Coaches celebrated the end of a successful school year with a summer BBQ at the YPIE College Zone. Students showcased their talents with an art show and student performances. Everyone enjoyed the food from the local Chipper Truck (owned by the parents of one of our YPIE Scholars!) and our friends at Shake Shack generously donated soft serve ice cream.  The competitions were fierce out on the front lawn during games of Flag Football and Steal the Bacon!

YPIE Fellows Are Off to College

YPIE Fellows finished the year strong with an astounding 98% reporting their intentions of attending college.  Now that's something to celebrate!  We hope you've seen the video by now of Allan & Joseph, YPIE Fellows & best friends, finding out for the first time about their college acceptances to UPenn & Cornell. If not, watch it here - their excitement is contagious!
Summer Happenings at YPIE
Summer Bridge Program

College-bound Scholars & Fellows started off the YPIE College Success Program at a Summer Bridge session at Sarah Lawrence College.  Highlights included a campus-wide scavenger hunt to learn about different offices on a college campus as well as an event sponsored by Grad Bag where students received free dorm supplies.  YPIE's College Success Program is designed to provide students with the guidance and support they need to transition to college and navigate their path through graduation.
Summer Scholars

Students in the YPIE Summer Scholars program have been working collaboratively to develop their own policies on two of the most pressing global challenges: climate change and immigration. In addition to conducting their group research projects, students have visited college campuses (Pace University, Manhattanville College, Columbia University) as well as local educational institutions (The Tenement Museum, American Museum of Natural History, Beczak Environmental Education Center, and the Statue of Liberty).
YPIE Fellows Summer College Prep Academy
Navigating the college experience is a lot easier when others lend their advice. YPIE Fellows got a jump start on their college applications by attending the Summer College Prep Academy, where they learned about the complexities of the application process and received assistance with their college essays thanks to a team of trained YPIE volunteer College Coaches. Students also took a bus trip to tour Wesleyan University. The summer program concluded with a panel of financial aid and admissions experts, as well as parents, and graduating seniors about how to navigate the college process. We also heard from a panel of former YPIE Fellows who shared their college experiences.  Students represented SUNY Binghamton, Vassar College, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY New Paltz, and Occidental College.
