Grow with Great Hearts - A New Year

In the academic season ahead, Grow with Great Hearts endeavors to inspire you in the contemplation of personal human flourishing. An environment like Great Hearts, wherein we are surrounded by continuous learning and the act of mentoring others, be it students, colleagues, or friends, enables us to fully engage in our own growth. The Talent Team is focused on deepening our discussion around the topic of human flourishing, and you may see the image to the right on a number of messages throughout the year.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson stated, “It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself. Serve and thou shall be served.” In this first issue of the new year, Grow with Great Hearts has asked Chief Academic Officer Jake Tawney to share his thoughts on leadership.

Leadership Tapestries

by Jake Tawney, Chief Academic Office

“It takes humility to recognize that, no matter what your post, the work is always bigger than that which is directly under your leadership.”

One of the oldest forms of art is tapestry weaving, and among the most famous examples are “The Unicorn Tapestries.” This seven-piece collection dates to sixteenth-century Paris and depicts the hunt of a unicorn set in an idealized French landscape. I have always been fascinated by the idea of weaving together individual strands to form something this intricate. As turns out, there is also an entire area of mathematics called braid theory, which is situated in the broader area of knot theory.

What is true in pure mathematics and the fine arts is also true in leadership: when strings are woven in and out of one another in intentional ways, the result is something that is greater than the sum of its parts. The process of leading teams and of sitting alongside others on a team is like the construction of a braid, and in its best form, the creation of a beautiful tapestry.

Leadership Fellows

The Great Hearts Leadership Fellows Program provides a cohort of aspiring leaders with a year-round opportunity to grow in leadership. Candidates must be recommended by their Headmaster for consideration. Our 2023-2024 cohort consists of seven Fellows representing seven different academies across three regions. These individuals support a classroom role while immersing themselves in the development of key leadership competencies through practical, hands-on administrative functions that enrich the campuses they serve. INTERNAL JOB BOARD

The new academic year brought forth three new Headmasters in Texas, each of whom shared valuable insights into the community of support at Great Hearts which aided them in their growth.

Anne-Kathleen Borushko

Headmaster, Forest Heights Lower School

Headmaster Borushko initially entered the field of education as a district high school English teacher, moved to Great Hearts for its limited technology focus, and then found her true home in the “joyful order, the emphasis on Great Books, and the beautiful knowledge-based curriculum that focuses on the educating the whole child.” On the occasion of leading at another school, Ms. Borushko says, “It has been such an honor to have this opportunity - to see the similarities and differences among various Great Hearts schools within the same network, as well as to understand that some differences are necessary in order to serve the unique populations at each of our schools.”

Headmaster Borushko deeply appreciates the welcoming and open support of the Forest Heights faculty, and she also values her time under the leadership of two very different but uniquely talented and dedicated GH Headmasters, Trinette Keffer and Charles Brogan. Ms. Borushko reflects, “Headmaster Keffer taught me how to foster a vibrant school culture and empower teacher-leaders. Headmaster Brogan taught me about emotional constancy and the art of crucial conversations.” More broadly she notes, "Great Hearts – this organization and this community – has had a profound impact on my life and the lives of my children. I believe we are better because of the experiences we have had with Great Hearts."

Kate Imber

Headmaster, Monte Vista South

Now in her 8th year at Great Hearts, Headmaster Imber has served in a variety of roles, from math interventionist to 5th Grade lead to Assistant Headmaster. Drawn to Great Hearts for its

emphasis on classical children’s literature and high academic expectations, she credits two headmasters (now Executive Directors), Mandi Cannon and Monet Lessner, as fundamental to her growth and career path. “When I sought improvements or efficiencies in our math instruction,” she remarks, “Ms. Cannon pushed me to prove those changes were needed using data. Ms. Lessner saw potential that I didn't see in myself, and she promoted and supported me in my leadership aspirations."

She highlights that her most fulfilling moments occur when “I am helping to solve problems for students who are struggling – this is where my heart lies.” Ms. Imber finds many challenges in her new role daily, particularly juggling such a large amount of information while still learning the ropes, but she has already set a personal growth goal to understand fully the processes and procedures in order to create a stable and fully functional academy for staff and families.

Kreigh Knerr

Headmaster, Irving Middle School

With previous experience as headmaster in a private classical school, Kreigh Knerr joined Great Hearts in the fall of 2022 as Assistant Headmaster at Irving Upper School. While in college, Mr. Knerr found leadership inspiration through a year-long independent tutorial on classical leadership philosophy centered on such great thinkers as Quintilian and Cicero. He also references the incredible support at Irving Upper in his now second year, sharing, “Here at Great Hearts, the regular conversation with other internal campus leaders has proven invaluable. I’m also fortunate that the whole leadership team at Irving Upper took such care last year in onboarding me to all things Great Hearts.”

As he enters this first year as Headmaster, Mr. Knerr expresses, “I really want to increase my dexterity with the technical aspects of charter school leadership in Texas, but the most fulfilling thing about this new role is simply that my faculty and staff have been so trusting and deeply invested in my success. ‘We will make certain that Mr. Knerr flourishes in his role’ seems to be the motto of the middle school this year, and I’m grateful for that consideration. It’s a very Great Hearts thing to be concerned with the well-being of your leaders, but it’s still noteworthy and lovely!”

Each month, Grow with Great Hearts curates a short listing of highlighted opportunities - to share with you new avenues for growth available across our network. Feel free to share these opportunities with colleagues outside of Great Hearts, and receive a faculty/staff referral bonus.

A Time for Reflection

The concept of human flourishing is most certainly centered in our common understanding of what is distinctly human, and most importantly, how we come together to share this human understanding. Andrew Zwerneman of the Cana Academy brings this idea to life in his essay, "Seeing What It Means to be a Person."

He holds up the power of memory, of human connection, and of observation as integral to our search for understanding our place in the world with a beautifully stated summary, "The vision we hold of our shared humanity illuminates, then, the humanity we see and preserve in any one of us. By it we see who we are, bound to each other, bound to remember every life and to give ourselves to the lives we carry."
