From Our Director Habitat Welcomes Future Homebuyers! “How does somebody go about getting a Habitat house, anyway?” That is the number one question asked of our staff and volunteers when they are out and about in the community. Potential applicants stop by our offices, ask our ReStore cashiers, approach us after speaking engagements in the community and pose the question when we are wearing our name tags at the grocery. The answer is sometimes the start of a beautiful journey and partnership. While homeownership may not be for everyone, we believe everyone deserves a safe affordable place to live – and we are grateful for the chance to make homeownership affordable for those eager to invest their time and effort into building equity for their families. The Habitat homebuyer process goes like this… Throughout the year, potential applicants can visit sandhillshabitat.org and sign up to attend the fall recruiting session In late August, we will host 2 evenings for applicants  The first of the two evenings will be informational and will include staff and current homeowners to answer questions The second evening is the actual application submittal in which applicants will sit with our volunteer committee members one-on-one to make sure they have included all of the necessary documents The committee scores each application to ensure they meet the financial criteria (earning between 30-60% of county median income) and have a debt to income ratio of less than 43%  All families who qualify financially will receive a home visit. Habitat triages the homes regarding need – with those in the direst circumstances scoring the highest The homeowners spend the next 12-24 months investing sweat equity hours and attending coursework designed to help them in their homeownership journey. We are excited to announce the approval of the next 13 Habitat homeowners in the Sandhills! Although they will officially begin orientation in a few weeks, several are already spending time with us on the build site and in our ReStore!

Soon, they will be homeowners. Just like our other homeowners, they will be caring for their new homes, yards and neighbors and paying property taxes (did you know Habitat homeowners paid $170,000 in property taxes this year – and nearly $5 million in the past 30 years)? 2022 Apostles Build

A look around reveals many Habitat communities in Moore County. Some go back thirty plus years. These communities may have twenty or just one home. These residences support the larger community by way of payment of property taxes. These communities are well maintained and inviting. They have produced college graduates, business owners and town council members. All share in the pride of home ownership. Supporting one family at a time and helping to sustain communities over time, Habitat’s mission is involved in bringing “Thy Kingdom to earth as it is in Heaven.” A floor in a Habitat home is literally a platform for growth. With support from the Faith community of Moore County,  Shanetta, Anna and Elijah Strong will be in their new home later this year. Shanetta will pay an affordable mortgage after contributing 300 hours of sweat equity and attending homeownership classes.

An Apostles Build happens annually. We people of Faith contribute our time and treasure to make this happen. The coalition of churches making this  happen is shown below. It would be a blessing to have more churches show their faith by joining us with financial or volunteer supporters.

Britt Vanden Heuvel Floral/Home Decor 403 Volunteer Hours Britt was born in Oberaudorf in 1943 on the Austrian Border. She stayed in Oberaudorf until the war ended in 1945, then moved to Munich and she lived there until she came to the United States in 1956. Britt lived in New York City with her mother, grandmother and sister. She went to Monroe Business School and learned data processing. She then went to work for Pan American Airways. She married in Jan 1963 and has 2 children, Michelle and Michael, and 4 grandchildren, three boys and one girl. Her husband was in the US Navy. She moved with him to new duty assignments working for various companies doing mainly data processing jobs. In 1978 she relocated to Reston, VA where she went to work for the Federal Government “DOD”. Britt retired in 1996 as a GS-14, as the Technical Test Director for the Worldwide Military Command and Control System.  The Vanden Heuvals currently live in Pinewild. Their children and grandchildren all moved to North Carolina!
