"A New Manifestation of Zen as Art"

Greetings!
Celebrated
Chinese Zen "Soul" Calligrapher Alok Hsu Kwang-han will be giving a free talk on Friday,
November 12th at 6:30pm at Goldenstein Gallery. In his
talk, "A New Manifestation of Zen as Art", Alok will share his insights on art
as a direct communication of Zen.
Alok is an
internationally acclaimed and highly original Zen calligraphic
painter from China. His work is a startling new synthesis of the
beauty of Chinese calligraphy, the spontaneity of Zen, and the
evolution of Western Psychotherapy. He has had solo museum exhibits
in the US and internationally. He has also brought what he calls
"the creativity of non-doing" into trainings for international
organizations and for business leaders. Alok is best known for his singular work
of creating Zen Calligraphic Portraits combined with exploration
sessions for individuals, couples, families, and organizations. He
is currently completing a new book, "A New Manifestation of Zen as
Art," that explores art as a communication of Zen itself, looking
profoundly at the impact that art has in our every day
lives.
Werner Schneider, professor of Script and
Topography in Wiesbaden Germany said of his work:
"Alok Hsu Kwang-han possesses the
rare gift to penetrate the psyche of the one that comes to him, and
to create a portrait of the heart of the person through the
language medium of calligraphy. In this way, the works of Mr. Alok
Hsu Kwang-han are unequaled, particularly because they reflect the
highest level of spiritual capacity as well as genuine creativity
and artistic worth."
Since 1974 Alok has completed more than 1500
commissioned works around the world. Since 2003, he has painted Zen
calligraphic portraits for guests of Goldenstein Gallery and at Mii
Amo, the destination spa of the Enchantment Resort in Sedona,
Arizona. He has also used this medium for "individual assessment"
of a team of facilitators at the Boeing Leadership
Center in Seattle, Washington, and for individual and team training
with the Global Diversity film team at Nike, Inc. in Portland,
Oregon. He sees his work as "Zen art that supports the art of
life."
In January, 2006, upon the invitation of Breaking
the Ice, a non-profit organization in Berlin, he served as the
"spiritual elder" in the Jordanian desert with a group of Israeli
and Islamic individuals preparing to go through the Sahara Desert
together as an experiment in making peace. With them, he created
two spontaneous Zen calligraphic paintings, "Morning Heart in the
Middle East" and "On the Way". He is featured in an
upcoming film about the project.
Alok's talk "A New Manifestation of Zen as Art"
takes place at 6:30 pm on Friday, November
12th. "A New Manifestation
of Zen as Art" is free to the public but seating is limited so
audience members are encouraged to arrive early.

Also, mark your calendars for Tuesday December 7th when we continue
our custom of celebrating many sacred traditions with a special
Chanukah Candle lighting with Rabbi Alicia Magal. Fine art jewelry
and Judacia artist Dorit Herlinger's beautiful menorah, which was
inspired by the Red Rocks, will be used in the ceremony. The
candle lighting begins at 6:30pm.

Your Own Personal
Zen Caligraphic Portrait
Resting in silence and
with a spacious heart, Alok, with spontaneous brush strokes, paints
what you may have deeply wished or even needed to see - your
beauty, your essence, your courage, your particular issues cast in
a new light. Then he explores with you - the lines of the painting,
its ink shadings, the painting as a whole, the eternal whiteness of
the paper. These reveal to you who have a deep yearning the essence
of your being, the clarification of your issues, the path to
contentment.
