March 2024

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone had a wonderful March.

I am excited to share the notes of appreciation below; these are from the Ronald McDonald House Family Room “Appreciation Station.” Please encourage families to visit the Family Room which provides a safe space for reflection and solace.

The NC Children’s enterprise planning team is sending monthly updates. I am working closely with them, and significant progress is happening behind the scenes.

I am eager to see the improvements to our hospital facilities. As most of you have heard, we will expand our operating room capacity by 50%, critical care capacity by 75%, and NICU by ~25% starting this summer. We continue to be full and beyond capacity even after the viral winter infections are beginning to leave our area. Thank you for all you do to care for these inpatients and manage the care of children across the state.

Congratulations to Dr. JoJo Yang and pediatric neurology! For the first time in institutional history, the UNC Pediatric Epilepsy Center received Level 4 accreditation.

We had an outstanding residency match this year! Our incoming intern class is from 19 different schools and 13 states. We also matched interns into the inaugural pediatrics-medical genetics program! Thank you to Cynthia Powell, Kenya McNeal-Trice, and Meg Kihlstrom for their advocacy in making this happen. Check out our new residents in the body of the message.

We have had some terrific research successes over the past month as noted in the message below. We are successfully building the physician scientist pipeline. We have recruited a new resident and now have five fellows in the Physician Scientist Training Program.

For those specialties and faculty attending the Pediatrics Academic Societies (PAS) meeting, we have a shared UNC/Duke reception on Friday night from 8 to 10 pm. This should be a lot of fun!

I wanted to end this month’s message with a note of appreciation for all of our clinicians based at our regional UNC Children’s-Novant Health Wilmington Campus. I visited last Friday and had a wonderful trip. I am amazed at this terrific team and the great care provided in the Southeastern part of NC.

As always, I am thankful for your dedication to the children and families of North Carolina.

Gratefully,

"The Power of Partnership"

The UNC Health, Novant Health and UNC School of Medicine Annual Report

Through our collaborative partnership, Novant Health, UNC Health and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine are working to advance the health and wellbeing of communities in North Carolina.

You are invited to read more about the inspiring work to improve and deliver care through expanded clinical, academic and research opportunities. We have unveiled a 2022-2023 digital annual report chronicling accomplishments and offering powerful examples of how clinicians and team members from across the state have collaborated to pursue opportunities that strengthen our organizations and the communities we serve.

Congratulations!

Gwen Burrows

Division Administrator - Neonatal/Perinatal Medicine

Nominated by: Misty Good, MD, Division Chief

Gwen is an outstanding, relatively new Division Administrator for Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, but she jumped right into her role as a leader in our Division! She constantly goes out of her way to find innovative solutions to problems and is always willing to take on a challenge. It’s obvious every day how much she cares about this Division and doing an exemplary job. She’s calm, kind, keeps everything running, and we are so fortunate to have her as a part of UNC Children’s!

Thank you for all you do Gwen!
