Dear Friends,
Happy 2024! I hope 2023 ended with a wonderful holiday season and you’ve had a great start to 2024. Our viral infection season was early again this year. Though the bronchiolitis and influenza admission rates are slowly decreasing, we continue to be at capacity at the NC Children’s Hospital and very busy at our partnership hospital in Wilmington! We continue to plan for ongoing expansions of our hospital capacity over the next two years to meet this demand!
We celebrated the ribbon cutting for phase-one of the NCCC expansion! We expect to be up to the full complement of 74 beds by mid-summer. Thank you to everyone who has helped plan this expansion effort and advocated for this expansion! A special thank you to Wayne Price, pictured in his hard hat here, who took an active role in demolition for the next phase!

Dr. Stuart Gold retired on December 31st after serving as Division Chief for Hematology Oncology since 2008. During his tenure, the division expanded to 19 faculty, 13 APPs, 9 fellows, 5 research staff, and 3 administrative staff. He led several successful fundraising efforts, including the Reelin’ for Research event, which has raised over $5M since 2009. From a research perspective, $5.4M in research funds have been awarded to Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Division faculty, which is truly outstanding. Also, under Dr. Gold’s leadership, Hematology-Oncology now has a presence in Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Sanford, and Wilmington. We are truly thankful for his exceptional leadership and already miss him!
Dr. Michael Stoiko also retired in 2023. He was a critical care faculty member on the Wilmington regional campus and has worked there for over a decade. He served as the Medical Director of the PICU in Wilmington from 2013 to 2023.
| |
He was an instrumental part of the group’s leadership, improvement of inpatient care, and the integration of the team with UNC. We are very thankful for Dr. Stoiko’s leadership and his excellent care of critically ill children at the coast.
I am also excited to share that Dr. Christian Lawrence and Dr. Nina Jain will be our new Associate Vice Chairs of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. I am very grateful for their leadership!
In mid-January we started academic half-days for residents. The goal of these sessions is to improve protected educational experiences. These sessions are off to a great start and education leadership has received positive feedback! Thank you to the Chiefs and program leadership for your thoughtful approach in implementing this change and to the faculty for teaching!

Incredible teamwork in OR 24
On behalf of Concetta Lupa, MD…
Yesterday, I had one of the most stressful clinical scenarios in my career managing a decompensating child in the Children's OR who ultimately survived a prolonged resuscitation. His survival would not have been possible without the incredible teamwork of all of the children's OR staff, our general OR anesthesiology call team, the peds surgical team, pediatric cardiology, and our PICU colleagues. Our responsibility to care for patients in their most vulnerable state is one of the greatest challenges we can undertake. This was especially amplified on a holiday weekend, when resources are not as plentiful, and was carried out in an incredible way across a talented multi-disciplinary team who ultimately helped to save this patient's life. The response was quick, and the teamwork was collaborative. I was so proud to be a Tar Heel yesterday and am grateful to work in such a supportive environment.
I hope to not miss anyone who was present but special thanks to:
- Dr. Ben Cobb, Dr. Briel Power, Dr. Alex Levine, Dr. Natalie Page, Dr. Jenny Boyd, Dr. Ryan Shea, Dr. Katie Westerich and PICU RT who responded to our many calls.
- Our original scheduled team who were super helpful and collaborative: Dr. Priscila DaSilva, Dr. Michael Phillips and Dr. Ian Kratzke who remained calm and obtained access in suboptimal conditions.
- Our anesthesia tech, Denise Williams, who continued to bring additional supplies and support to our team in superstar fashion.
- All of the OR staff who supported the entire process.

The UNC Pediatrics CF team was featured in the January edition of the CFF Network News. Written by Mary Beth Prieur, PhD, the article addresses the increasing importance of mental health among the CF community. With higher rates of anxiety and depression, guidelines for screening, and possible mental health impacts of CFTR modulators, cystic fibrosis care teams have been finding novel ways to help coordinate mental health care. At the University of North Carolina Pediatric CF Center, we have been managing initiation of select mental health-related medications, such as SSRIs, for people with CF for several years. | | | |

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)
Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining"!

Jessi is a remarkable person to work with. I'm always amazed at Jessi's depth of knowledge about the PEDS Department. Jessi is my "go to" for most IT matters. Not only is Jessi always helpful; she is able to get to my level of understanding. Great people skills, hard-working, and a great sense of humor! Thanks for all that you do, Jessi.
