There is a Korean proverb that says, "one word can erase a thousand yangs (Korean currency at the time) worth of debt." Which is to say that words that can erase large sums of debt. Though it's really exaggerated, the proverb simply means to describe the importance of words.
One study showed that the average person speaks 5 million words throughout his or her lifetime.
That seems to be nothing more than just some interesting FYI but let's consider this for a moment.
If we substitute yangs with dollars, one word is equal to a thousand dollars, and the average person speaks 5 million words in his or her lifetime, then a person speaks enough in a lifetime to erase 5 billion dollars of debt!
Though words do not actually translate to money, I do believe that words do have great significance and the things we say can affect the way we live our lives.
There is another Korean proverb that says, "words turn into seeds." This is to say that words can shape our destinies.It is about the time in the season where the flowers begin to bloom. I hope that our words can become like seeds that grow beautiful spring flowers.
As you know, I do not have an extensive English vocabulary so there are times when I can't find the right words to express what I mean to say. However, we don't only communicate with our mouths, we also use our eyes, facial expressions, and body language to communicate.
I hope this week, the words we speak through our mouths and body language become like seeds that plant and grow beautiful spring flowers.
Splendor in the Grass
- William Wordsworth
What though the radiance which was once so bright
Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind;
In the primal sympathy
Which having been must ever be;
In the soothing thoughts that spring
Out of human suffering;
In the faith that looks through death,
In years that bring the philosophic mind.
