A Huge Success

June 2023

Oh, What a Night!

Our Fabulous Fifteen event was a HUGE success! It was so great to be back in the library after four years, and amazing to have more than 250 people showing their support for the library. Longtime Sudbury residents and brand-new ones enjoyed the delicious food and tequila tasting bar, while listening to the mariachi band and two L-S students perform on the piano. Whether you were able to make it or not, check out a selection of photos from the night (thank you, Sara Colket Photography and Gavin Hill!): goodnowlibrary.smugmug.com/Gala-2023/.

Thanks to the money raised from sponsorships, tickets, donations, and raffles for the event, the GLF will be funding an expansion of the library's digital collection. More and more people are using e-book and e-audio formats (these have higher pricing than any other format) for reading, which creates a lot of demand. Survey results and library patrons have indicated frustration with long wait times for digital formats, and the GLF's funding for the expanded digital collection will help reduce those times and will give first priority to Sudbury residents for the most popular titles.

Even though we just finished this year’s event, work is already underway for next year’s gala. Mark your calendars for Friday, May 3, 2024 for our Kentucky Derby-themed event!

Multimedia Event and Author Visit: Jean Duffy

June 21 at 7pm

Soccer Grannies

Join us for a feel-good story you won't want to miss! Jean Duffy, author of Soccer Grannies, and Beka Ntsanwisi, founder of the South African Soccer Grannies team, are coming to the Goodnow Library for a special author visit and multimedia event on Wednesday, June 21 at 7pm.

Soccer Grannies: The South African Women Who Inspire the World tells the story of a team of 40- to 80-year-old women in rural South Africa who defy social convention to play soccer for the companionship and health benefits it provides. Their strength and resiliency help them face life’s challenges with dignity, humor, and hope. They teach the rest of us that age, gender, and expectations cannot define an athlete.

Jean, a soccer player herself, will recount how their shared love of soccer brought the two teams together on both sides of the Atlantic. Beka will share why she formed the team, the struggles she faces, and her dreams for the future. The event also includes a screening of a short documentary about the Soccer Grannies team. Books will be available for purchase. The author is donating books proceeds to the Beka Ntsanwisi Foundation.

This is an in-person event at the Goodnow Library. Recommended for ages 12+; the documentary film includes mention of domestic violence.

Museum Pass of the Month:

The Trustees of Reservations

The Trustees of Reservations preserve and protect more than 100 special properties of exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value—nearly 25,000 acres—all around Massachusetts. From Crane's Beach in Ipswich and World's End in Hingham to The Old Manse in Concord and Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, visitors to Trustees sites enjoy local history and nature in its various forms: beaches, meadows, forests, swamps, and more.

In the summer of 2019, the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, the largest park of its kind in New England, became part of the Trustees. The museum, located in Lincoln, MA, encompasses nearly 30 conserved acres and presents contemporary art from New England—and beyond—with sculptures in the landscape and museum exhibitions. For a full list of locations, please visit thetrustees.org.

The Goodnow Library Foundation funds the museum pass program at the library, which provides discounted rates at many local museums and attractions in the region. Passes can be reserved up to eight weeks before the date of use. Each pass admits two adults and children under 18 at the Family Membership admission price at the Trustees' properties that charge admission. This varies from property to property; please check the Trustees' website before booking a pass.

Get to Know the Library Staff

Meet Esmé Green, the Library's amazing director! Born to bibliophile parents and named after J.D. Salinger’s For Esmé—with Love and Squalor (her brother was named after another Salinger favorite: Holden), Esmé was destined for a life in the library. But she didn’t know it until after college, a trip around the world, and looking at jobs that all required an “MLS,” which she was quick to discover meant a Master of Library Science. After graduating with her MLS from Simmons University, Esmé worked in libraries in Reading, Westfield, and Cambridge before landing here in Sudbury, where she’s been the director for twelve years! Her favorite genre of books is true crime, which she listens to almost exclusively on audiobooks (and also follows on various podcasts, in addition to being part of the Library's True Crime Book Club). She’s currently listening to The Luminaries by Susan Dennard.
