A FRIENDLY REMINDER
DURING TAX SEASON
According to IRS.GOV, tax-related identity theft occurs when someone uses your stolen personal information, including your Social Security number, to file a tax return claiming a fraudulent refund.
It is essential to know that the IRS DOES NOT:
- Initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text, or social media to request personal or financial information.
- Call taxpayers with threats of lawsuits or arrests.
- Call, email, or text to request taxpayers’ Identity Protection PINs.
If the IRS notifies you of any suspicious tax returns you did not file, or you cannot file your tax return because someone has already used your Social Security number, you may be a victim of tax fraud.
The best thing for you to do is to reach out to the IRS with the number provided on the notice to report the activity. You can also visit IRS Identity Theft Victim Assistance for instructions on what you can expect from the IRS to resolve the issue.
