Dear Tau Brothers and Kappa Sigma Family,
R.D. Burck
Dan Burck '51
Jan. 29, 1933 - Sept. 12, 2015

Today we mourn the loss of Brother Dan Burck '51, who died September 12.  I know of no one who was more beloved and respected by his brothers or more worthy to wear the Star and Crescent than Dan.

I'm grateful that we had the opportunity to honor him as International Kappa Sigma Man of the Year this past spring.  He embodied every virtue that Kappa Sigma holds dear and was an inspiration to all of us.

UT Longhorn fans observed a moment of silence Saturday evening to honor Dan at this season's first home football game at Texas Memorial Stadium.  Anyone who knew Dan would agree that the University and the Longhorns have lost one of their most loyal supporters and devoted fans ever.

UT Chancellor William H. McRaven released the following statement about Dan's death.

"Today the state of Texas and The University of Texas lost a champion of education and the truest of friends. Dan Burck served The University of Texas System with great distinction and oversaw a period of significant growth, both in size and reputation. Dan provided instrumental guidance for me when I first became chancellor and, I'm proud to say, also became a close friend. He will be greatly missed by so many, but his legacy will forever be felt by the people of Texas," said McRaven.

Dan was 82 years old. He is survived by his wife, Penny Hight Burck; son Brian Burck and his wife, Monica; daughter Becky Chiarodit and her husband, Mike; daughter Terry Quinn and her husband, Graham; son Ben Richards and his wife, Leigh; daughter Claire Richards; and seven grandchildren.

His funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16, at 3 PM at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 3201 Windsor Road, in Austin.

I know you will join me in keeping Dan's family in your thoughts and prayers.

A.E.K.D.B.,
