A Fig Recipe for Happiness

by Sara Ivey

Feasting together is a fundamental human experience, a kind of communion, a trustful and often soul-satisfying act that can lead to reconciliation. Since God placed humankind in the garden to tend and keep it, we have created rituals around food, turning biology into an act of culture, a liturgy of community and family. I am grateful that at Transfiguration, we continue a rich history of staying connected through acts of hospitality, shared meals, and fellowship.

We sit at the same table at monthly St. Elizabeth’s Guild Potluck dinners, gather in people’s homes for Foyer Dinner Groups, and assemble for special events throughout our church calendar. As we look to the year ahead, our Mission, Ministry & Connections Committee is coordinating an exciting initiative to bring people together and support our church. “Fig Parties” will launch on Sunday, August 25 and you won’t want to miss this year’s lineup of Transfiguration member-hosted experiences! Scroll down to the "Big Fellowship News" section to sign-up as a Fig Party host, participate in Foyer, and be a Bake-off baker.

While producing television programs for The Food Network, I focused on creating shows that nourished people’s souls. Faithful Departed Update

Luann Tucker Welch

Last week we shared the death of Luann Tucker Welch, devoted 50-year member of Transfiguration. Arrangements are now made. A Requiem Eucharist will be held Friday, August 9 at 1:00pm at the Church.

This Weekend & Week

Sound Technician Training Saturday

We are eagerly seeking new sound technicians to help at our three weekend services. If you are interested in learning more and being trained, we invite you to join us tomorrow, Saturday, July 20 at 10:00am to explore the new Roper Hall sound system. If you cannot make it this Saturday, there will be a second session next Saturday, July 27 at 10:00am. This special meeting will provide valuable insights for both current and prospective team members. This ministry ensure that everyone hears and enjoys all of our services in person and online.

Meet The Vestry This Weekend

Quarterly, members of the Vestry are available for you to meet with them to learn what's new and share your questions, insights, and ideas. This quarter's meeting will be this weekend, Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21. Please look for your vestry members in the Gathering Space and take a moment to hear what's new.

Don't Miss Your Chance

Bishop Search Survey

There is still time for you to share your hopes and perspectives with the Bishop Search Committee. Don't let this opportunity pass because your opinion is important -- to the Diocese and to Transfiguration!

Click the button below to access the survey. The survey will take approximately 20 minutes and must be taken in one sitting. While the survey can be taken on any device, we recommend one with a larger format screen such as a computer or tablet. The survey will be open from now until July 29 and aggregate results will be shared at listening sessions across our diocese in late August and early September. Please contact Cathleen Dolt with any questions.

Construction Continues

When you come to Church this weekend you will notice that work around the porte cochere and belltower is well-underway. We ask for your patience and care as you move around the parking lot and campus for the next few weeks as the improvements are made. New and exciting things are happening!

Call for Vestry & Diocesan Delegates

Throw your hat into the ring to join the Vestry or become a Diocesan Delegate. These important positions provide leadership for our church and representation in the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas.

Applications are due by August 4 for Vestry Candidates and by August 30 for Diocesan Delegates.

Foyer Groups Are Forming

It’s time to organize the Fall Foyer Groups for 2024. The Foyer ministry brings together small groups of 6-10 people to host meals, share in fellowship, and is an excellent way to meet people here at Transfiguration! We will gather to reveal the randomly sorted groups on Sunday, August 18 from 4:00pm - 6:00pm in the Parlor. Bring a snack to share and your choice of beverage. If you would like to participate or if you have questions about Foyer Groups, we want to hear from you.

Many Ways to Give of Yourself

Little Pantry, Big Help

One of the ways our church serves the homeless is through the little pantry which is on the right of the church doors. You can help us keep it stocked.

Items to contribute: Food that can be eaten walking away from the pantry such as cans with pull-tops, easy-to-eat proteins, water, non-perishable fruit and veggies. Just drop your contributions in the brown basket near the name tag board.

You can also assist with our efforts by volunteering to be responsible for checking and adding items to the little pantry one weekend each quarter.

A Special Way to Give

Did you know that the Transfiguration Endowment Fund was first established decades ago with a $100 gift from Fr. Terry Roper? And this past week he made another contribution in honor of his 89th Birthday. You, too, can honor significant milestones in your life, or in the life of someone you love, with a gift to the Endowment. In fact, an anonymous donor has pledged $1 for every year being celebrated by such a gift, which led to an additional $89 being donated in honor of Fr. Roper's 89th Birthday. To make a commemorative gift for yourself or someone else, donate through Realm or mark “Church of the Transfiguration Endowment Fund” on the check and indicate the number of years in the memo line. If you have questions, please contact Bill Keslar, Endowment Committee Chairman.

Mexico Pilgrimage Opportunity

There is an opportunity for 2 people to join pilgrims from Transfiguration on a journey to the mountains of Mexico in 2025 to witness one of nature’s true wonders: the vast overwintering monarch butterfly colony. Led by Fr. Casey, this pilgrimage is tentatively scheduled for February 19-25, 2025 and will feature visits to three different parks in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Preserve, engagement with local culture and people, and a visit to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The cost is $1,800 plus airfare. Most of the trip occurs at/above 8,000 ft of elevation, including hikes of several miles, so participants must be in very good health. If you have further questions, please contact Fr. Casey.
