From the Desk of the Alderman
The first half of 2018 has been one of the most productive periods in recent memory for the 9th Ward. Over the last several months, we've celebrated the completion of several major projects that will make our community stronger for years to come. And there is much more to come, with $80
million of new construction projects currently underway or about to begin.
We've opened the south terminal of the 95th Street station, broke ground for the Gotham Greens expansion, opened a new cleaners on 111th Street and completed about 75% of construction for our new community center. In regards to safety, the 5th District established a station-based Strategic Decision Support Center, with a district- wide ShotSpotter gunshot detection system and crime cameras. With the crime rate consistently decreasing and the implementation of new strategies we are on track for a safe and fun summer.
On May 1, the City rolled out a six-month pilot of a new bike sharing program on the South Side. It features "dockless" bikes, which will allow anyone to rent a bike through a smart phone app and not have to find a rental station. Besides the ease, each ride will cost $2 less than a Divvy bike. As residents of the 9th Ward we need to closely monitor the pilot program, especially to see whether the "dockless" bikes are being locked to street signs or bike racks at the end of each trip.
Finally, I want to congratulate all the graduates from the Class of 2018 on a job-well done, wish all the Dad's a happy Father's Day. My staff and I thank you for allowing us to build a better future by enhancing the quality of life for our community!

Gotham Greens "Doubles Down" in the 9th Ward
Gotham Greens, the worldwide pioneer in the field of urban agriculture and a leading regional producer of hyperlocal, premium-quality greenhouse grown vegetables and herbs added momentum to the resurgence of the 9th Ward.
A community celebration on March 15, marked the start of construction of the first phase of Gotham Greens new 140,000 square foot greenhouse facility. Their new state-of-the-art indoor farm is now under construction on vacant land at the former Ryerson industrial site and is near Gotham's existing rooftop greenhouse that opened in 2015 on top of the Method home Products factory in Pullman Park. Once completed in early 2019, Gotham's new greenhouse will become the largest-ever built in Chicago and will create 60 full-time, green collar jobs.
