Saint John the Baptist Catholic School Newsletter

Dear SJB Families,

We had our first All School Mass today on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. Father Mark taught us a new word: Anaphoneo. This is the greek word for "loud cry of joy" and is used to describe Elizabeth's reaction to meeting Mary in the Visitation. Why is this important on the Feast of the Assumption? It helps explain the importance of Mary. Father Mark said this is the only time that word is used in the entire New Testament. It is used only 5 times in the Old Testament and each of those times is a reaction to an encounter with the Ark of the Covenant. Mary is the New Ark of the Covenant because she bore the Word of God made flesh - Jesus Christ. Mary was assumed into Heaven and looks on us with love, always pointing us to her Son! See you at Mass!

"Never be afraid of loving the Blessed Virgin too much. You can never love her more than Jesus did.” ~St. Maximilian Kolbe

Virtue of the Week - Prudence

Prudence (Also known as Diligence) is one of the cardinal virtues.

Definition: "Right reason in action." Prudence enables one to reason and act rightly in any given situation

Prudence in Practice:

  • Seeking advice from reasonable and trustworthy persons when making decisions.
  • Carefully considering all circumstances before making a decision.
  • Praying about what the Lord would have you do before making a decision.
  • Acting upon a sound decision made after thoughtful deliberation.

Saintly Example- St. Pedro Calungsod

Enlightened by faith, the path prudence points out to us may not always look wise to the rest of the world. St. Pedro Calungsod is a great example. At the age of fourteen, he was invited to accompany the missionary priests who trained him and to hand on the faith to others. He traveled to Guam, where he immediately began helping spread the gospel. One day conflict arose with a chief who didn’t want the Christian missionaries in his village; he burst in on the missionaries, swearing to kill them. Witnesses who knew Pedro well said he could have bested the chief in hand-to-hand conflict or successfully run for his life. Instead, Pedro stood by the priest who was with him, dodging spear after spear, until the enraged chief finally impaled him through the heart. Smart, athletic, talented, and faith-filled, seventeen-year old Pedro had much to live for. Instead, listening to the wisdom of God, he chose to lay down his life for what He believed in.

Scripture: Matthew 6:22–23

“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!”

Prayer

Dear Jesus,

You know what is best in every situation. Please help me to grow in the virtue of prudence, so I can know what I should do in each circumstance I face today. And once I know it, help me to do it for love of You.

Amen.
