Message from Pastor Tim

Dear Members and Friends of the Ark and Dove Community,

Can you remember the anxiety we faced in March of 2020 when we realized we had no vaccine for COVID and large parts of the world went into shut down? I was amazed and delighted by the many ways that people at Ark and Dove came together to ensure that our ministry continued under less than wonderful conditions. You all were incredible.

38 months later we have, by the miracles of modern science, several vaccines. 38 months later, the virus has mutated and is less harmful. 38 months later, the vast majority of Hospitals are not requiring masks in most areas of their campuses. In the face of changing realities, the Session voted this week to change our policy on masking at Ark and Dove.  Masks are welcome at all services and events and we encourage all at-risk people to take good care of themselves, but masks are no longer required at 9:00 AM or 10:30 AM worship. Once again we are asking people to respect people who wear yellow or red name tags. Yellow means, I only do elbow bumps. Red means no physical contact please. In this way we honor all people in our church community.

This Sunday 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM worship will be identical and abbreviated, but we have a great opportunity to be engaged citizens of Anne Arundel County. Our theme Sunday will be community organizing. The Sermon Title is Jesus, Community Organizer?  After worship we will offer Listening Session Groups for people who have not yet participated in our ACT, Anne Arundel Connecting Together Listening Session campaign. These will be efficient sessions as many of us will need to conclude our work before Godly Play and Sunday School let out.

Why do we do Listening Sessions?

To build community and build the community

To strengthen relationships

To discover what community issues are on the hearts of our citizens

To answer the call of Jesus to serve others

To be able to stand in front of the County Executive, the County Council and state level elected officials as ACT with credibility, to show them we do our homework.

To advocate and work for just and positive change in our county and state

To learn and grow

Because you are a child of God and you are important

We really want to know what is on your minds and hearts because we are a community of disciples.

Peace of Christ,

Tim

Verse and Prayer

38 And he said to them, “How many loaves have you? Go and see.” When they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.” 39 Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed and broke the loaves and gave them to his disciples to set before the people, and he divided the two fish among them all. 42 And all ate and were filled,

Morning Prayer

O God of steadfast love and faithfulness, as I awaken this day in expectation, I turn my heart toward you, for I am your beloved. Fill me with your wisdom and insight, and guide my feet in the way of peace as I try to walk the faithful path.

Evening Prayer

Recounting both the blessings and challenges of this day, I give thanks to you o God, for my hope is in Christ who makes all things new, and so I rest this night.

Dear Friends,

This week, the band will lead our music in a blended service. The services will open with the song Gratitude, by the group I Am They. This will be sung by Adell Gaurin, Paul Doughty, and Kim Champagne, accompanied by Johnny Fuller on guitar, Karen Dodson on synth, Brittany Wellington on Cello, and myself on the piano. This song opens with a gentle piano and guitar introduction before the lyrics “All my words fall short. I’ve got nothing new. How could I express all my gratitude?”. There are solos intertwined with a tight, 3-part harmony throughout, in this contemplative song of thanks.

The Offertory is called Multiplied, by the group Needtobreathe. The song begins with an acoustic guitar and piano introduction that ultimately builds into a full band sound, including both drum set and auxiliary percussion instruments as the song progresses. The song opens with the lyrics “Your love is like radiant diamonds, bursting inside us we cannot contain. Your love will surely come find us, like blazing wildfires singing your name.” The chorus declares “God of mercy, sweet love of mine, I have surrendered to Your design. May this offering stretch across the skies, these hallelujahs be multiplied!” The instrumental interludes are exciting, with percussion and piano solos. Warning: you will likely want to tap your feet and move to this tune, and that is highly encouraged!

Have a wonderful weekend.

With love,

Rebecca

Musician Spotlight

Tracy Churchill remembers first singing in a children’s choir at about age 5. She sang in school-based choral groups starting in fourth grade, continuing through college, and participated in musical theater productions during high school. Tracy has been singing in the alto section of the Ark and Dove choir for more than 10 years. Several years ago, she joined other members of the choir to sing in an opera at Carroll Community College.

Tracy works for the Federal government as a space planner/interior designer. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, reading fiction novels, and daydreaming about home renovation projects.

Per Capita Special Offering

Ark and Dove is now receiving the Per Capita Special Offering. The church pays a combined $40.00 per member to the General Assembly of the PCUSA ($9.85), The Synod of the Mid Atlantic ($1.15), and the Presbytery of Baltimore ($29.00) to cover the Administrative Expenses of our denomination. Per Capita funding is how Presbyterians mutually share the costs of coming together and to set directions for the future. Contributions to Per Capita provide the ecclesiastical infrastructure that binds our ministry. It enables churches to call pastors; supports those pastors in their ministries; provides for guidance in troubled times; encourages those called to church leadership; and enables us to gather as the body of Christ. You can pay your per Capita by clicking here.

Anti-Racist

Love Wins!

Our peaceful demonstration in support of LGBTQIA+ and Black Lives Matter brought out 40 people, including friends from several churches in Annapolis, ACT, and the One Pasadena Community Group. Many thanks to Amy Tardiff for organizing, providing activities for children and making incredible new signs! Sadly, this past Sunday our Pride banner was stolen. We've had 5 incidents of vandalism on our banners between March 31st and May 7th and are working on new security measures.

Follow our Social Justice FB page for updates. Contact Paula Sparks at trebleclef48@gmail.com to be added to the Group.
