Mental Health Awareness Month

Inevitably, stigma is associated with mental health disorders. Stigma is a mark of disgrace associated with judgment or fear. We have all likely witnessed it, but have you ever taken the time to talk about it? Having conversations about mental health can help debunk myths and break the stigma. Visit changetochill.org for ways to reduce stigma associated with mental health: Reducing Mental Health Stigma

Join us NEXT WEEK for our virtual presentation Dangers of Vaping: What Parents Need to Know in 2024.

It will be held on Tuesday, May 14 at 6:00pm Eastern Time.

This school year, youth vaping is as big an issue as ever, especially given growing mental health challenges among youth. Behind the bright colors and sweet flavors of e-cigarettes are harmful chemicals and nicotine addiction. Join us to learn the essentials for helping kids avoid or quit vaping.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Understand and recognize tobacco industry tactics targeting youth
  • Explain the dangers of nicotine e-cigarettes/vapes, non-nicotine vapes, and other new tobacco products
  • Know the steps to protect youth and how to advise others to get involved
  • Take action in their own communities

If you can't make it, don't worry! We will be offering this presentation later this year on September 10 and November 19.

Continue to learn about the amazing things happening around the school!

  • Knutson Construction, who is doing all the work at the high school, offered a hands on experience for 130 students on May 1. They provided a 30 minute classroom presentation and then students put on all required safety gear to tour the site and see real world applications.

  • SLPHS is expanding the Musical Arts program to offer marching band!

  • Mr. Miller had an electrician in to show students how this work exists across several areas. Students were given real world experience as they explored this career opportunity.

  • Mr. Miller leveraged a parent who works for Toro to ensure curriculum for Robotics and Engineering classes are on par with current needs in those fields. He was able to consult with several engineers to keep curriculum cutting edge as he prepares our students for workforce needs now and in the future.

  • The CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) program had a 90% proficiency passing rate on the skills test. A PCA (Personal Care Assistant) program was also added. In the future, a medical terms class is being added as we prepare students for jobs. In fact, many of these students are already working in the industry right here in SLP.

  • This past year we had ~10 paid internships for students. The Career and College Readiness Center has built a sustainable model to offer even more internships. And students are excited! With nearly 50 applicants this year, the program is ripe for growth.

  • Thank you to everyone who supported our Teacher Appreciation Lunch!
