50th Issue of New York PATA Newsletter

Dear Members and Colleagues,

We are excited to announce that this is the 50th issue of our NY PATA Newsletter since it was introduced in February 2022 by the new board of directors 2022-2024. Our motivation and inspiration to this endeavor were recognized by PATA CEO, Liz Ortiguera. She said, “BTW - I liked your newsletter so much that I shared it with my Executive Board Colleagues. They appreciate seeing the alignment and renewed energy there. Thanks, and regards, Liz”

Thanks to our members for making it educational, and for sharing memorable experiences. We would love to hear from you also on how you have recently made a positive impact on sustainability, or a write-up on your recent cruise FAM, or becoming a sponsor for a NY PATA meeting. Industry statistics on newsletter opens indicate it to be only 34%. The NY PATA Newsletter has an exceptional 60% average of opens, and also, it has a global reach.

PATA’s data, reports and publications are released all year round and assist you in making informed business decisions. Stay up-to-date with the latest trends most critical to your business. Our members represent all segments of the tourism industry from both public and private sectors. Thank you so much for reading.

With best regards,

Elizabeth

October 26-27, see you at Ras Al Khaimah, UAE!

Message from PATA CEO

Dear PATA Members and Industry Colleagues,

We're in the final stages of preparation for our second physical event of the year - our PATA Annual Summit to be hosted in the beautiful emirate of Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) located just under an hour drive from Dubai.

Our focus with this Summit will be to deliver an Asia Pacific Summit that supports your industry recovery by catalyzing initiatives and new collaborations. An essential part of the PATA DNA through its history is its spirit of community. By connecting our network members/industry partners from North America, Europe, Middle East, and Asia Pacific at this global crossroads (in real life:) ), we hope the event will trigger opportunities that are a step above what can be developed via Zoom interactions. Real interactions with new and old connections collaborating in a stunning environment of beach, desert and mountain terrain. Science has proven that the combination of in-person connections coupled with a different, open environment will deliver broader and more unique ideas. Now is that time that we need to think outside the box - invest in leaving your Zoom environment and come join us for a valuable and fruitful experience. We look forward to seeing many of you there.

This past month saw a raft of exciting announcements progressing the travel reopening. A brief roundup of just a few of the markets making great headlines:

It was an honor to be so warmly welcomed back to the first country I called home in Asia - Japan during the Tourism Expo Japan 2022. PATA Vice Chair Ben Liao and I had a great series of meetings with the Japan Tourism Ministry, JTB, JATA and, of course, our own PATA Japan Chapter. We were there for the announcement of Japan border restrictions easing in October as well as Hong Kong SAR’s announcement to end mandatory hotel quarantine for travelers. Great news for the region overall.

Indonesia hosted what I'm sure was a stunning and fruitful G20 conference. I was sad not to attend since I was felled by COVID that week.

Singapore had an exciting F1 Event this month. After a two year hiatus, F1 hit a new record in attendance with 302,000 fans attending the three-day event. Congratulations to Singapore Tourism Board and the Ministry of Trade and Industry (Singapore) on the successful event. This small city-state hosts one of the most exciting events in the region and across the globe.

And Singapore received the honor of being named in the Condé Nast Traveler awards as best city in the world in 2022! As a resident here for the past 17 years, I can advocate for this as well :).

And last but not least, congratulations to the Maldives Ministry of Tourism and Visit Maldives on this Golden Jubilee Year of Tourism to your destination. Celebrating 50 years of success! It was my honor and privilege to accept an award on behalf of Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) for playing a role in supporting the development of Maldives tourism through the years. PATA has been supporting and catalyzing tourism development to Asia-Pacific since 1951 at the birth of tourism to Asia.

Last but not least, a big congratulations to all our PATA Gold Award Winners. We recognized 25 winning projects that stood out from 136 entries in this year’s PATA Gold Awards across our Sustainability and Social Responsibility and our Destination Marketing categories. This year we added two new Tourism Destination Resilience awards to highlight this area of focus for PATA and its critical need for destinations. The winning Gold Award projects are truly deserving of the honor for continuing to set the industry standard for excellence and innovation. 👏🏻 Next year, we'll add a category for Customer Service Excellence. As mentioned in my last newsletter, this is absolutely a category that we need to celebrate and acknowledge. Asia is exemplary in its delivery of hospitality with heart. Let's put the pride and honor back into service for our everyday service heroes.

Best regards,

Liz

New Nonstop Flights from EWR Newark

Dubai - Nice - Azores - Bergen - Palma de Mallorca - Tenerife

Emirates

It's a super-long trip but it's certainly worth the effort: the first-ever direct flight from Newark to Dubai, a 14-hour-long affair, will officially launch on March 25, 2023.

The offering is a partnership between United Airlines and Emirates, connecting Newark Liberty International Airport and Dubai International Airport. The 6,852-mile flight will depart New Jersey at 10:15pm and land in the United Arab Emirates at 7:30pm the next day. The return flight, on the other hand, will leave Dubai at 2:15am and arrive that same day in Newark at 9:05am.

United Airlines

Five of the added nonstop United Airlines flights from Newark EWR are not currently being served by any other North American airline.

Nice, France: United is now officially operating planes between Newark Liberty International Airport and Nice Côte d'Azur Airport.

Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal: Beginning May 13, you'll be able to take a flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to Ponta Delgada in the Azorers. This is the third Portuguese destination that United caters to (Porto and Lisbon are the other two).

Bergen, Norway: Starting May 20, United will be the only American airline to fly direct to Norway. How cool? Three times a week, New Yorkers will get to board a plane at Newark Liberty International Airport and fly nonstop to Bergen.

Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain: The new flights will start operating three times a week beginning June 2. Also departing from Newark Liberty International Airport, these flights will be the only nonstop ones from the United States to the Balearic Islands.

Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain: The new route will start service on June 9 and connect New York to Tenerife directly.

The Honourable I. IN COOPERATION WITH UNITED TRAVEL AGENCY (UTA)

22-29 SEPTEMBER 2022

DAY 01 - 22SEP - NEW YORK/CHICAGO/AMMAN

It all started with an invitation from the Jordan Tourism Office and today, we start our trip to Jordan, ‘Yes, it’s Jordan’

We flew from Newark Airport for Chicago to catch the Royal Jordanian (RJ) flight to Amman. The New York non-stop flight on RJ for the 22Sep was cancelled.

Flight was okay with the exception of some bumpy areas up in the sky. Seats in RJ's Dreamliner 787 were teeny-weeny but luck was on my side to have an empty row of three seats all to myself. Close to 12hrs flight.

With the assistance of the Representative from United Travel Agency, securing the visa, immigration and customs formalities, all went smooth and fast. I even got a sim card in 5minutes.

Drive to the W Hotel took 30minutes and to my surprise, I got the upgrade - the W Suite.

Dinner was at SUFRA, from the Jordanian table established in 2011, its the first restaurant to serve a wide variety of traditional Jordanian home-made dishes in an elegant-traditional setting. Sufra Restaurant is a true sanctuary for an authentic Jordanian dining experience.

Jordan, officially the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, is a country in Western Asia. It is situated at the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and Europe, within the Levant region, on the East Bank of the Jordan River.

United Travel Agency (UTA) is Jordan’s oldest and most conspicuous inbound travel agency and Destination Management Company. Established in 1948, they have a collective travel and tourism experience of over 72 years, and their team is dedicated to the same guiding principle – absolute commitment to their guest’s satisfaction!

Follow me as I travel and explore this side of the world and imagine what they offer as far as attractions and cuisine are concerned.... "YES ... IT'S JORDAN"  Link to read more.
