Digital Marketing and Online Sales News
January 2015 Edition
Greetings
We're starting off the New Year with a lot of optimism for online travel sales. Online sales continue to grow and point of sale transactions are equally on the rise with new offerings from the credit card merchant service providers on mobile devices.

The world of marketing continues to change rapidly and last year spending on digital marketing, out paced all other forms. Our newsletters this year will be taking a new focus on featuring informative articles that we curate on our site, interviews with your peers and perhaps a few experts in the field of online travel sales.

Welcome to the January edition.

Are Big Oil's woes, good for tourism?

This is an excerpt from Jamie Horowitz's Article on LinkedIn. I think that it captures the essence of what a lot of travel marketers have been thinking. The content is from a Canadian perspective, but many countries will feel the same effect with lower fuel costs (airline, bus, train, car touring).

In Canada we've been obsessed with oil for the last decade. This has been good for short term gains but it's interesting how governments seem to find more marketing dollars for their tourism portfolio when the chips are down in other industries, rather than investing in tourism when there are plentiful revenues. Enjoy Jamie's insights below.

"16 years ago, almost to the day, The Washington Post published an article by Howard Schneider about the low Canadian dollar (Canadian Dollar Hits Record Low). In January 1998 the dollar hit the record low of US $0.6879! The tourism industry in Canada enjoyed one of its best years then and in 1999. More than 44 million Americans visited Canada in 1999.

Without minimizing the negative effects of the low price of oil on Canada's economic activity and the workers in that industry, it is clear, based on history, that this year should be fantastic for the Canadian tourism industry (and the American industry as well). The loonie is approaching levels not seen since 2005. That year Canada saw an influx of over 30 million Americans!"   (You can read the full article on LinkedIn.
