5.4.24 Weather and Lake Levels Update

HOUSTON - Council Member Fred Flickinger would like to make residents aware that Houston Public Works continues to closely monitor the weather, channels, and lake levels. We are working closely with our partners at Coastal Water Authority, San Jacinto River Authority, Houston OEM, HPD, and HFD.

Lake Houston: Lake Houston is currently at 48.16 feet (normal pool is 42.4 feet) Gates on the spillway dam are open and discharging water over the spillway. Gates on Lake Houston will remain open until Lake Houston returns to normal pool. Total inflows into Lake Houston are at 122,510 cfs and outflows are at 172,255 cfs. Lake Houston has crested and is receding. Lake Houston levels can be monitored here.

Lake Conroe: Lake Conroe is currently at 202.6 feet (normal pool is 201 feet). The San Jacinto River Authority is currently releasing 18,955 cfs. Lake Conroe levels can be monitored here.

West Fork of the San Jacinto River:

The West Fork of the San Jacinto River crested this afternoon at 58.8 feet which is almost 3 feet lower than anticipated. There are areas south of Kingwood Drive (Kingwood Lakes, Town Center, Kingwood Greens, Barrington, Deer Ridge Estates, Forest Cove) that are experiencing high waters due to backflow from the channels and river through the storm sewers. Along Hamblen Road and south of Hamblen Road there are still extensive flood waters. These waters are receding and will continue receding into the night.

East Fork of the San Jacinto River:

Mandatory evacuation is in effect for the eastern side of the East Fork of the San Jacinto River from FM 1485 to Lake Houston.

The East Fork of the San Jacinto is at 71.7 feet and receding quickly. The East Fork should be below major flood stage by 10:00 PM. Huffman-Cleveland Road bridge over the Luce Bayou is still unsurpassable. Minimal structural flooding on the East Fork for areas in the City Limits.

There are still areas on the east side of Kingwood that is experiencing high waters coming from storm sewers due to backflow from the rivers. These waters are receding and should subside by tonight.

Forecasted Rainfall for Tonight and Sunday:

Rain chances will be likely later tonight into Sunday as a stronger disturbance approaches from the west and interacts with a very moist and unstable air mass over the area. Showers and storms will develop over central Texas later today/early tonight and then move east/southeast into the area late tonight into Sunday.

Additional rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches with isolated totals up to 5 inches will be possible.

Monitor Official Sources for Current Information:

Please remember it is important to utilize verified news sources for inclement weather information as well as tune in to local news stations for changing forecasts. Harris County Flood Warning System (harriscountyfws.org), Houston TranStar (houstontranstar.org), and the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston Forecast Office (weather.gov/hgx).

To monitor current water levels at Lake Houston, visit www.coastalwaterauthority.org. To see current levels for Lake Conroe you can visit www.sjra.net. Please also keep in mind with rain events flash flooding is always possible, stay weather aware and avoid roadways if possible during rain events. It only take 6 inches of water to move a car. Always turn around, don't drown.

Monitor Stream, Bayou, and Creek Conditions:  Rain may move repeatedly across the same area, causing creeks and bayous to rise and possibly exceed their banks. Stay informed of current conditions and avoid traveling near creeks and bayous. You can monitor streams and rivers here at the River Forecast Center.
