Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks Citywide Tour Opens This Week at Polk Bros. Park on Navy Pier!
|
Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST), the City of Chicago, Chicago Park District and Boeing partner to present the annual citywide summer tradition, Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks.
The Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks tour of Romeo and Juliet kicks off as one of the inaugural events of the new performance lawns at Polk Bros Park on Navy Pier with three performances next week: Wednesday, July 26; Thursday, July 27; and Friday, July 28 - all at 7:00pm.
Adapted and directed by Marti Lyons, this 75-minute abridged production of the timeless classic Romeo and Juliet brings the most tragic, beautiful love story in Shakespeare's canon to life. Verona burns under summer's heat-and the hatred of two families. The Prince decrees: if Montague or Capulet again disrupts the peace, death is the punishment. The production combines Shakespeare's original verse with dynamic staging to connect audiences with the characters' journeys.
Made possible by production sponsor BMO Harris, Romeo and Juliet will tour to 18 neighborhood parks across the City, July 26 - August 27, 2017. To view a map and schedule,

EPA Funding Secured for DuSable Park Cleanup
|
|
Under a cooperative agreement, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will provide $6.8 million to the Chicago Park District to continue cleanup at DuSable Park along the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. Under a 2014 fraud settlement with EPA, Kerr-McGee Corp. and Anadarko Petroleum Corp. agreed to pay for environmental cleanups at former Kerr-McGee sites across the nation.
The Park District will use the new funding to identify and remove any remaining thorium-contaminated material at the park and dispose of it at a licensed facility. This contamination dates back to early 1900s when Lindsay Light Co. manufactured incandescent gaslight mantles at the site. Since 2000, EPA has overseen several partial cleanups involving the removal of all contaminated surface and subsurface soils which had been discovered during construction work at the park.

#StopZika Citywide Awareness Campaign |
|
The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) urges residents to #StopZika with simple steps they can take to protect themselves from the Zika virus. Though Zika does not currently present a direct threat locally, the #StopZika campaign provides residents with tips to protect against the virus when traveling and also protect against other mosquito-borne illnesses here in Chicago.
Zika is primarily transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito and a person with Zika can pass it to his or her sex partners. Mosquitos carrying Zika have been found in many parts of the world, including but not limited to, Latin America and the Caribbean. People living in the greater Chicago area who have not traveled to these areas are generally not considered at risk for Zika virus infection unless they have had unprotected sex with a person who traveled to Zika affected areas. A list of Zika affected areas can be found at www.cdc.gov/zika/geo.
Four out of five people infected with Zika virus won't have symptoms. Symptoms can include fever, rash, sore joints and red eyes (conjunctivitis). Zika infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects, fetal loss and other poor pregnancy outcomes. Pregnant women who have developed symptoms and live in or have recently traveled to an area with risk of Zika, or have had unprotected sex with a person who has traveled to a Zika affected area should talk to their doctor about testing.
Though mosquitoes native to Chicago do not currently carry the Zika virus, there are simple steps all residents can take to protect themselves and their family from mosquitoes during the summer months. Residents should consider the following tips recommended by medical experts:
- When outside, use insect repellant as directed.
- Wear shoes long pants and long-sleeved shirts when outdoors for long periods of time.
- When inside, use air conditioning or make sure open windows and doors have screens.
- Remove standing water around your home, where mosquitoes like to breed and lay eggs. This includes water that collects under potted plants, in birdbaths and near storm drains.
CDPH maintains an aggressive seasonal mosquito surveillance and prevention program which, using the model created to combat the West Nile Virus, includes regular testing of mosquitoes caught in traps located throughout Chicago. The test results indicate mosquito species, including any associated health risks, and guide CDPH's efforts to further reduce risks through targeted neighborhood outreach and spraying.
