Project Overview

The City of Miami Beach is replacing the aerial water main along 41 Street between Pine Tree Drive and Collins Avenue. This critical project will upgrade the existing infrastructure to a 20-inch pipe via horizontal directional drilling. Once completed, the new pipe will provide the necessary flow capacity to support increasing demand along Collins Avenue.

Project Update

The contractor for the 41 Street Water Main Replacement project has made significant progress on the schedule and will now begin phase II tomorrow, May 15, 2024. This phase will comprise pipe pullback and demobilization of drilling equipment. Please be advised that pullback operations are continuous. Work will begin at around 7 p.m. and will continue until it is completed.

Traffic patterns will shift for Phase II. Please find the list of changes below:



Phase II: Temporary Traffic Pattern Changes

(Wednesday, May 15 – Friday, May 17)

Temporary Traffic Pattern Changes

• 41 Street westbound between Pine Tree Drive and Indian Creek Drive will be reduced to one lane.
• 41 Street from Indian Creek Drive to the east street end (Beachwalk) will be closed to all traffic.
• The left turn on westbound 41 Street and Pine Tree Drive is prohibited.
• Collins Avenue at 41 Street intersection will be closed to all traffic. See posted detour signs.
• Indian Creek Drive from 40 to 41 Streets will be changed to one lane northbound and one lane southbound. Vehicles on Collins Avenue that wish to continue northbound will make a left on 40 Street and a right on Indian Creek Drive. 
• Indian Creek Drive southbound from 44 to 41 Streets will be reduced to two lanes: one right turn only lane and one straight lane.

Timeline

This project is expected to conclude in September 2024. Work hours are Monday–Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Due to the nature of this operation and heavy machinery, a 24-hour lane closure will be in effect.

Please note that pull back operations are continuous and may occur outside the stated working hours to ensure timely completion of the project.

Please know that this schedule may change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.

What to Expect

• Commuters to and from Miami Beach will face delays on 41 Street due to lane closures. Please plan accordingly and seek an alternate route, when possible.
• There may be construction noise due to equipment.
• There may be moderate noise impacts outside of normal working hours, including overnight periods, due to ongoing operations.
• There may be moderate noise impacts outside of normal working hours. 
• A staging area will be set up within the closed lane.
• Emergency vehicles will always have access.
• There will be increased off-duty police presence during construction hours.
