Alderman Reilly Reports

400 N Lake Shore Drive Groundbreaking

Earlier this week, Alderman Reilly joined Related Midwest for the groundbreaking of 400 North Lake Shore Drive.

Once completed, this highly anticipated development will consist of two residential buildings containing approximately 1,100 residential units with ground floor commercial and amenity space. During Alderman Reilly’s robust Planned Development process, he secured a $10 million donation to the Park District and commitment to build DuSable Park; completion of Founder’s Way creating a landscaped riverfront walkway that extends to DuSable Park and Navy Pier Flyover; and over 4.5 acres (or 200,000 square feet) of public green space that will be created upon the completion of this project. Please click here to learn more about the development.

Alderman Reilly would like to thank SOAR, neighborhood residents and local stakeholders for their input in the development process. Stay tuned to Reilly Reports for construction updates related to this project.

Important Information Regarding Upcoming Larrabee Street Changes:

1-Way Configuration Between Erie & Superior

Our office asked Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Traffic Engineers to conduct a traffic study on North Larrabee Street, between West Erie Street and West Superior Street – due to reports of wrong-way drivers, vehicles not stopping at stop signs, and gridlock traffic.

In response to our request, CDOT recommended making the following changes to improve the flow of traffic and enhance pedestrian safety:

  • Two-way to one-way (northbound) conversion of North Larrabee Street, between West Erie Street and West Superior Street
  • Detached curb extensions at the northeast corners of North Larrabee Street at West Huron Street and West Superior Street
  • Speed hump installation on North Larrabee Street, between West Huron Street and West Superior Street

On Monday, July 8, CDOT will complete the two-way to one-way (northbound) conversion of North Larrabee Street, between West Erie Street and West Superior Street (weather dependent). During the reconfiguration process, North Larrabee Street will remain open to vehicular traffic.

Alderman Reilly has asked 18th District Commander Michael Barz (LINK TO LETTER) to assign a patrol squad to North Larrabee Street to prevent wrong-way drivers.

Additionally, the Alderman has authorized a portion of the Aldermanic Menu to fund the installation of the two curb extensions and a speed hump at this location. CDOT has completed installation of the speed hump and will install the curb extensions later this year.

Alderman Reilly is confident that CDOT’s recommended changes will increase safety and reduce traffic congestion in the area.

Residential Permit Parking Zone 1189 Changes

Last summer, residents reported that River North bar patrons would illegally park in Residential Permit Parking (RPP) Zone 1189 and host curbside parties after the bars closed. These parties had a negative impact on quality-of-life and often turned violent.

In response to these reports, Alderman Reilly introduced an ordinance (O2023-0004231) at the City Council to make RPP Zone 1189 violations a towable offense.

The Alderman is pleased to announce that he secured approval from the full City Council for this ordinance. The new regulations will take effect on Monday, July 1.

Additionally, RPP Zone 1189 signs have been installed at the following locations:

  • North side of Superior, from Orleans to Hudson
  • North side of Illinois, form Orleans to Kingsbury
  • Both sides of Huron, from Larrabee to Hudson
  • North side of Huron, from Orleans to Hudson
  • 668 North Sedgwick - Sedgwick, from Erie to Huron

Residents can check eligibility to purchase RPP Zone 1189 permits/daily passes on the City Clerk’s website. RPP Zone 1189 permits and passes can be purchased online or at City Hall located at 121 N LaSalle Street, Room 107.

Please note, purchasing RPP Zone 1189 permits or daily passes does not excuse residents or guests from paying meter fees during the day (8am-6pm). Meter fees must be paid during the day or the vehicle’s owner is subject to receiving a citation.

This work will include infrastructure trenching and helix foundation and pole installation. Please note: This work will disrupt planter beds within the parkway

  • Huron, from Kingsbury to Sedgwick
  • Kingsbury, Ontario to Chicago
  • Huron from Larrabee to Kingsbury
  • Superior from Larrabee to Kingsbury
  • Erie from Larrabee to Kingsbury

Please contact CDOT if your building has plantings, irrigation systems, or electrical components in a planter. You will need to remove anything you do not want damaged by the light pole installation.
