Greetings Slim People!
I was in my hotel room, dialed the front desk and told them I needed a wake-up call.
She rang me back me back and yelled, "What are you doing with your life?
Slimsational Slim Folks,
Before we delve into Four Days of Slimness, I gotta remind you to mosey on over to Humphrey's on June 2nd. It's a Sunday. A Fun Day!
Chase and I are opening the show at 6 PM. We'll be playing each and every song from our brand-new Pennies from Heaven CD.

Make a night of it! Book a room at the beautiful Half Moon Inn. It's right on the water, and it's one of my favorite Sandy Eggo hotels.
And let's not forget July 13th!
What? Slimmy's got a gig July 13th?
Yes we do, Slim People. We're coming back to The Encore in Columbia!
It's a great club, great sound, great lights., great food...and the music ain't bad either!
I'm gonna open the show singing songs from the Pennies from Heaven CD. Then the full Slim Man Band is gonna take the stage. Kevin Levi on sax, Rick O'Rick on piano, Hit Man Howie Z on bongos and...
Shea Welsh on guitar! We'll be doing all the Bona Fide guitar songs...Midnight Train, Lunch with the Queen. And more!

4 Days of Slimness
A few months ago, I got a call on my shoe phone.
| |
A friend of a friend asked me if I could put together a Rat Pack show in Annapolis, Maryland. It was for a charity gala she was organizing.
So I called up Sax Man Chase Huna and asked him if he'd like to fly back east. Then I dialed up Hit Man Howie Z and asked him if he'd like to beat on the bongos.
They were both onboard. And the Rat Pack Trio was born! Two of my truest, bluest amigos, meeting for the first time. Let the fun begin!
FRIDAY
Chase and I got to the airport and checked in for our flight to Baltimore, Maryland. Bawlmer, Merlin! Land of Pleasant Living!
Palm Springs Airport is probably my favorite. It's open air. Which is great...except when it's 120 degrees out!
| |
|
We boarded the plane and lucked out--got seats in the emergency row. Chase took the window, I took the aisle. We were all stretched out and ready for takeoff...
When the last guy who entered the plane stopped next to me and asked if he could sit in the middle seat. What're ya gonna do?
The guy settled in and started talking, told us he was a doctor, had multiple clinics. He'd also just opened an indoor pickleball court called "Pickle Bar."
Well, then the guy asks if we'd like to do a concert there. At an indoor pickleball court.
Sure! I've played in a zoo. True story. Well, not in a cage. Outside. The gorillas went bananas!
So why not a pickle bar court? We gave Dr. Dude our info. We'll keep you Slim Pickleballers posted.
We landed in B-Mo and the promoter (Diane) and her husband (Steve) picked us up and drove us to downtown Annapolis. We all had dinner at a very cool Italian bistro. After a delizioso meal, we went to their house.
Now you Slim People might be thinking...staying at someone's place that you don't know very well might be a little strange.
Would we be sleeping in bunkbeds? Do they have indoor plumbing? What if they're cat herders with 100 felines lounging in the living room?
Well, it was dark when we got there, so we didn't see much. But we each had our own bedroom. No bunkbeds!
SATURDAY
When I woke up the next morning, I walked out of the basement bedroom and saw a stunning painting of iconic Baltimore Orioles baseball player Cal Ripken, Jr. It was done by LeRoy Neiman, a famous sports painter.
| | I walked up the stairs, and noticed a grand piano in the corner, surrounded by a lot of pop art on the walls. Andy Warhol, Peter Max. The only thing missing was a Slim's Shady Trailer Park sign surrounded by Christmas lights! | I walked towards the kitchen and saw an antique phone booth next to the kitchen table. And the phone actually worked. I was gonna phone home but didn't have any change! |
The view was glorious. A large lawn led to a pier that jutted out into the Severn River. It was a cool, misty gray day.
I sat down at the kitchen table which was a work of art.
An artist created it out of a single piece of wood. Then they etched in the names of all the family members, starting with the old folks up top, and ending at the bottom with Steve and Diane's two kids.
I was tempted to carve SLIM MAN WAS HERE with my Swiss Army knife, but I didn't want to desecrate that lovely piece of history!
So I just carved my initials.
JFK. Just Effing Kidding!
| They brought out a beautiful breakfast. Diane made bread pudding, which I'd never had before. She's a-so nice! |
Afterwards, I wanted to take a cold plunge in the river. To my surprise, Chase wanted to jump in!
So we walked down to the pier and were ready to leap in when Steve offered to take us out on their motorboat.
So we went out for a quick cruise. On the way back, Chase and I dove off the boat into the freezing river and swam to shore. It was chillin'!
|
I took a scalding shower to try and get the feeling back in my frozen fingers.
Diane drove us to the gig that evening. Chase and I didn't know what to expect.
It was a pleasant surprise!
She had transformed a retail space in an upscale mall into an incredible concert venue. The sound was superb, best gear around. The sound engineers knew their stuff. The lighting was excellent. There were a bunch of stage lights and four spotlights.
The tables were decorated with LPs and 45s. What?!? Diane had taken old vinyl albums and singles and made placemats and centerpieces.
|
Now I know what to do with my leftover CDs! Use 'em as coasters!
Howie strolled in with his bongos and I introduced him to Chase. The Three Amigos!
|
We did a quick soundcheck and then it was SHOWTIME!
We began with L-O-V-E LOVE and got off to a swingin' start.
|
We played for a while, did some Dino, Frank and Nat and then took a break.
One of the many nice things about the show?
They had dressing rooms for us. So much nicer than changing clothes in the mens room! And the dressing rooms were stocked with...
|
Well, I'm not sure if I'd need any tampons, but the red wine removal stick was a nice touch!
The rest of the show was a blast. In between Slim sets there were auctions for golf outings and dinners and a night at Slim's Shady Trailer Park!
JFK. Nobody would bid on that!
We closed the show with That's Amore, and all 176 Slim Folks sang along...
"When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, That's Amore!"
SUNDAY
Chase and I went to Howie's house around noon and then went to see the Baltimore Orioles play baseball. How 'bout dem O's, HON!
It was Chase's first time at Camden Yards so we gave him the mini-tour, showed him around, got him some Boog's BBQ.
| |
Then we took our seats (7th row!) and watched one of the most exciting games I'd seen in a long while.
Rookie of the Year Gunnar Henderson hit a leadoff home run. O's pitcher Corbin Burnes had 11 strikeouts. He was on fire!
Or on far as we say in Bawlmer!
O's outfielder Colton Cowser made two spectacular plays: threw a guy out at the plate and later made a dazzling, diving catch that made Top Ten on SportsCenter.
O's beat the Seattle Mariners 6-3!
After the game, I stopped by to see my peeps for a quick hello. Slim People, it did my heart good to see the girls. I love my nieces to pieces.
|
And then?
We took Chase out for steamed crabs and crab cakes. It was his first time eating steamed crabs. Chase is now a true Baltimoron!
| |
MONDAY
We flew back to Palm Springs.
Did I mention that Palm Springs has a great airport? When you get off the plane, baggage claim is right there.
And the rental car place is just a couple steps away. You don't have to get on a bus and travel another 100 miles to pick up your vehicle!
You Slim People should come out here sometime.
Maybe Chase and I will be playing the Pickle Bar by then!
Many thanks to Diane and Steve for putting on such a splendid show and for the stellar hospitality. And big hugs to all the Slim Folks who showed up!
And huge gratitude to the Slim People for being so...Slimsational. You are the Slimshine of my life!
Keep in touch. And keep smiling.
It's all about love.
Who loves ya?
Uncle Slimmy
PS: Here's a YouTube video I made for crab cakes. It's my friend Clubby Club's recipe. It's different! He uses crushed potato chips as the filler. And she's a-so nice!
