  • Over Spring Break, Science Teachers Annette Orrico and Angie Patel brought 19 students to the Pacuare Reserve in Costa Rica.  Our students participated in nightly turtle censuses which helped research assistants collect biometric data, examine leatherback sea turtles for visible damage, and relocate nests if there is a potential threat to its success, such as erosion, predators and human interference.  Pacuare Reserve is home to one of the highest density leatherback nesting beaches in Costa Rica, and is one of the hotspots for the entire Caribbean region. This work is so important because the leatherback population is endangered. So, the students learned valuable lessons on conservation and human impact on populations such as the leatherbacks. Ms. Patel shared that our students showed grace and responsibility in the face of difficult conditions as they worked the census anywhere from 8 pm - 4 am shifts.  She shared that our students were up to the challenge and represented LT with character. The students also engaged in scientific research by finding a species local to the area and collecting data for a small research project which was presented to peers at the end of the week.

Panorama Student Perception Survey

Students at Lyons Township High School District 204 will complete a 15-20 minute Panorama Student Perception Survey on April 24, 2024. All participants will answer questions regarding overall school safety, climate, teacher-student relationships, sense of belonging, engagement, rigorous expectations, and diversity and inclusion during their 4th or 5th period class.

The results of this survey will help school and district leaders identify areas of strength and opportunities for growth within our school climate and culture. Students will access the survey using their school ID number. Responses will be viewed at the aggregate level to help school leaders ensure the school climate and culture are contributing to a welcoming and supportive educational experience for all students.

The survey is voluntary and parents had an opportunity to opt their students out of the survey during online registration. Students who were opted out of the survey will not be able to log in to take the survey and any student who chooses not to take the survey will be asked to work quietly while others complete the survey. Please direct any questions about the survey to Kristine Zieman, Coordinator of Assessment, at kzieman@lths.net.

Thank you for supporting the district as we work to provide a welcoming and inclusive school community for all students.

Thank you and have a great week.
