The Chicago Commission on Human Relations (CCHR) published its annual report on hate crimes in the City of Chicago. The data covers 2023 and incidents through June 2024. CCHR officials expect the true number of hate crimes to be higher than what has been reported, as they said “only a fraction of hate crimes get reported.” You can read the report via the links below.

Per the Cook County Assessor, the reassessment notices are going out and windows for appeal in Lakeview are opening next week July 2nd. When a township "opens" property owners will receive a Reassessment Notice in the mail that contains important information including the new estimated Fair Market Value of their property. A property owner has until the date listed under "last file date" to file an appeal if they choose to do so. Lakeview is scheduled to open appeals on July 2nd and go through July 14th. A new Lakeview SSA 27 funded mural has been completed on the wall of Central Savings Bank on the southwest corner of Belmont and Ashland. The Girl and the City mural by Matt Mederer (see below), serves as the symbolic gateway to Lakeview Center, the heart of West Lakeview. Thanks to the Central Savings Bank for hosting the wall and the event, as well as the LRVCC/SSA 27 for organizing the completion of the mural.

Our office will be closed on Thursday and Friday, July 4th and 5th in observation of Independence Day. Please note that garbage and recycling pick up will be adjusted to accommodate the holiday as well, so keep your carts out all week.

And finally, don't forget this weekend is the Chicago Pride Parade. It kicks off Sunday, June 30, at 11 a.m. and street closures start going into effect earlier in the day. The parade starts at Sheridan and Broadway, goes south on Halsted, east on Belmont, south on Broadway, and east on Diversey to Sheridan. See you there! https://pridechicago.org/

CPD cancels days off for Sunday's Chicago Pride Parade; officers to line entire route, Snelling says

There were 6 robberies in this two month period, which is down one from the previous period. Most of them happened between 1am-7am. Of the 14 burglaries that occurred, almost all were to businesses. A person was arrested in one of these business burglaries. Of the ones that happened to residences, one person was apprehended who committed two burglaries on the same day in this beat, and is suspected in a third. One of the residential burglaries was to an unlocked house- make sure your door is always locked, even when you’re at home. There was an increase in motor vehicle thefts, most of which were to Hyundais and Kias; if you have one of these and haven’t gotten the software update yet, please make sure to do so. The 14th District is also still giving out clubs to prevent car thefts.

CCHR Releases Hate Crimes/Hate Incidents Report

The Chicago Commission on Human Relations (CCHR), has released their annual report. We have worked closely with Commissioner Nancy Andrade and her staff over the past several years to address many of the issues in this report and want to thank her staff for their assistance on addressing the issues in our ward. CCHR is also part of the group effort to address the concerns with the escalation of hate incidents throughout the city and Evanston. The report outlines the City’s initiatives for addressing the problem of hate crimes and hate incidents.

The data in the report is organized by community area, bias motivation, type of incident, and disposition (to the extent known). It also requires CCHR to provide an overview of hate crimes and hate incidents from local, regional, and national perspectives; an overview of CCHR’s activities regarding hate crimes and hate incidents; plus, any findings and recommendations to reduce or eliminate hate crimes and hate incidents.

We encourage residents or businesses to continue to report to 311, CPD, CCHR, and our office instances of hate crimes or incidents so we may address the problems. These hate incidents may be in the form of graffiti tagging, posters, direct attacks, and more. City officials, including appointees and elected officials, are not immune from the law on these incidents, and complaints made be made to 311, or the Office of the Inspector General.

Street Sweeping

Next week, street sweeping will occur in sections 12, 13, and 14 (Lincoln Park and Bucktown). Please be on the lookout for signs and make sure to move your vehicle on your scheduled day (south and east sides of the street are normally done on the first day, north and west on the second; please watch for signs).

Sweepers will do more than one pass on the block in their initial cleaning, but will not come back to clean sections outside of their officially scheduled day. Please take the time to help clear the curb in front of your property to keep the sewers flowing well. Any leftover landscaping debris from winter months should be bagged and put in the alley by your trash cans. Please do not sweep landscaping debris into the street. Piles of leaves and heavy garbage also clog the sweepers and will cause significant delays. Other large objects like branches and metal will also damage the sweepers, so please remove them from curbs.

Pride Parade This Sunday

The Pride Parade has a new route and start time, stepping off at 11 a.m. at Sheridan and Broadway and will proceed south on Halsted; east on Belmont; south on Broadway and east on Diversey to Sheridan for disbanding. NASCAR is July 6-7!

The City of Chicago and NASCAR officials remind residents and visitors to be

aware of the NASCAR Chicago Street Race, July 6–7, 2024. As Chicago hosts the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series street races for the second year, residents and visitors are encouraged to be mindful of the traffic impacts, as well as safety measures in place.

As the course and viewing structures are assembled and disassembled, City of Chicago and NASCAR officials are working to further minimize impacts of street closures, parking restrictions, reroutes, and traffic. All businesses and residences will remain accessible during course set up, race weekend, and the break-down.
