32nd Ward Newsletter: July 12, 2024

Dear Scott,

Both the Bucktown and Roscoe Village Garden Walks are this weekend. Enjoy the neighborhood gardens in these communities and then spend some time in the neighborhood stores and restaurants.

Sunday is set to be a high heat day, so please take a moment to check on family, friends, and neighbors to make sure they are healthy throughout the weekend. Don't forget to keep pets out of the high heat as well.

Summer sidewalks sales and dog tails - Many of our community business corridors like Roscoe St, Lincoln Ave, Paulina St, & Southport Ave are having sidewalk sales this weekend. Shop summer styles on the sidewalk and enjoy amazing discounts on Sat, July 13 & Sun, July 14 during regular store hours! Many of the stores will be donating 5% of their sale proceeds to The Charlie Project Dog Rescue, sponsored by the Lakeview Roscoe Village Chamber of Commerce.

Property taxes- Lakeview Township is now open for appeals and will close on 08/14/2024. There will be a virtual appeal workshop on Tuesday, July 16 from 6pm to 7pm in English and Wednesday, July 17 from 6:00pm-7:00pm in Spanish in which homeowners will have an opportunity to learn about reassessments and ask questions. More information is listed below.

Street Sweeping - Next week's street sweeping schedule is in Bucktown, so please check the map below for your street sweeping dates.

Request a City Tree Planting

-Trees give shade that lowers the cost of cooling your home during the summer, especially on hot days like we’ve had this summer.

-Tree shade also lowers neighborhood temperatures outdoors, making walking in the neighborhood more pleasant

-Water absorption by trees reduces risks of flooding after heavy rains

-Trees improve local air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide, producing more oxygen, and fighting climate change

The City of Chicago Bureau of Forestry will plant trees in areas of your parkway that are free of obstructions like sewer or water lines, or existing stumps that need to be removed. If you received a new tree this year, don’t forget to water it often. Water trees around the base. Tree plantings can be requested via our office, using the City App or calling 311.

Have a nice weekend,

Alderman Scott Waguespack

Street Sweeping

Next week, street sweeping will occur in sections 17, 18, and 19 (Bucktown). Please be on the lookout for signs and make sure to move your vehicle on your scheduled day (south and east sides of the street are normally done on the first day, north and west on the second; please watch for signs).

Sweepers will do more than one pass on the block in their initial cleaning, but will not come back to clean sections outside of their officially scheduled day. Please take the time to help clear the curb in front of your property to keep the sewers flowing well. Please do not sweep landscaping debris into the street; debris should be bagged and put in the alley by your trash cans. Piles of leaves and heavy garbage also clog the sweepers and will cause significant delays. Other large objects like branches and metal will also damage the sweepers, so please remove them from curbs.

Residents can view street sweepers in real time using the Sweeper Tracker online tool.

We also want to remind people that wood chips in the parkway are not advised. They are one of the main things that wind up clogging sewers, and can also wind up on the sidewalks.

The City advises maintaining a traditional parkway with regularly watered and cut grass as this helps provide an area for water runoff which helps decrease the burden placed on the City's sewer system.

Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC) is calling on our amazing community for a little help!

We're currently running low on newspaper!

Do you have any old newspapers lying around? We'd be incredibly grateful if you could donate them to CACC! We use recycled newspapers to line many of our cages. They also help to keep our small furry (and feathery!) friends a little more comfortable.

You can drop off newspaper at the shelter's intake entrance, between 12pm-7pm. We are located at 2741 S Western Ave.

Ask your friends and family to donate their old newspapers as well! Every little bit helps!

Thank you for your support!

Art is Labor!

The Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection oversees Chicago’s landmark labor laws and ensures all of Chicago’s workers, including those in the creative sector, are protected. “Art is Labor.” is the City’s first-ever creative workers campaign that reflects the diversity of the creative sector through the visual representation of performing arts, arts management, filmmaking, and more. The campaign informs workers about their rights, which is crucial for empowering workers, promoting fairness and equity, and creating a culture of compliance. By providing creative workers with the knowledge and resources they need to navigate the work complexities of the sector, the campaign can contribute to a more inclusive, just, and respectful work environment for all.
