32nd Ward Newsletter: August 23, 2024

Dear Scott,

The Bucktown Arts Fest has returned this weekend in Senior Citizens Memorial Park. The event has been happening in Bucktown since the 80's and benefits programming at Holstein Park. It's a great family friendly event that focuses on local artists. There will be face painting, magicians, and a dog parade! More info here.

Now that both the RNC and DNC have wrapped up, we're officially in election season. This is a good time to check your voter registration status here. If you're not registered to vote, remember, it's super easy to do and you can do it online here. Sign up today!

Have a good weekend!

Make Sure You Know Who’s at the Door!

The Chicago Department of Water Management (DWM) reminds us that all employees and contractors carry IDs and wear construction vests. Anyone at your door who is requesting entrance should be asked to show their badge to you. There have been some incidents of people pretending to be from DWM who try to scam residents into buying water purification systems or worthless insurance.

DWM does not sell its services or promote the purchase of anything related to water.

If you think that you have been approached by a scammer, please call 911 and file a report.

Street Sweeping

Next week, street sweeping will occur in sections 12, 13, and 14 (Lincoln Park and Bucktown). Please be on the lookout for signs and make sure to move your vehicle on your scheduled day (south and east sides of the street are normally done on the first day, north and west on the second; please watch for signs).

Sweepers will do more than one pass on the block in their initial cleaning, but will not come back to clean sections outside of their officially scheduled day. Please take the time to help clear the curb in front of your property to keep the sewers flowing well. Please do not sweep landscaping debris into the street; debris should be bagged and put in the alley by your trash cans. Piles of leaves and heavy garbage also clog the sweepers and will cause significant delays. Other large objects like branches and metal will also damage the sweepers, so please remove them from curbs.

Residents can view street sweepers in real time using the Sweeper Tracker online tool.

Stormwater Management Tips

The Department of Water Management wants to remind us that we are seeing more heavy storms as our climate changes. But there are ways that we can work together to help prevent water from backing up in our basements!

Check out these 3 easy tips to help prevent flooding and prevent pollution:

1.     Only dump water down the drain.

Avoid dumping anything other than water (fats/oils/greases) down the drain or down catch basins in the street. Storm drains are for rain only. Dumping anything other than water down the drain or catch basins can potentially damage pipes resulting in flooding.

2.     Sweep, Don't Hose!

Sweeping around your house and driveway instead of hosing can help prevent debris from getting into the storm drain system. Debris in the storm drain system can cause backups in sewer systems which can result in flooding.

3.     Disconnect your downspout from the sewer system.

If you’re in a single-family home, one way to limit backyard and basement flooding is by disconnecting your downspout. During heavy rain, downspouts can send excess amounts of water into the sewer system which can cause backups and cause basement flooding. Note: if you disconnect your downspout, please make sure to send the water somewhere green, such as grass or a garden, or to a rain barrel. Do not aim it at concrete or asphalt as excessive water can wear away these materials.

Share these tips with your friends and family to help prevent flood damage and save yourself from high water damage costs. We can all spread this information to help our communities and preserve the environment at the same time!
