WALT LEGER, III

PRESIDENT & CEO, NEW ORLEANS & CO

Cutting Edge - 2024-Walt-Leger_III

NEW ORLEANS (July 17, 2024) - Walter “Walt” Leger, III, is President and CEO at New Orleans & Company, the official destination marketing and sales organization for the tourism industry of the City of New Orleans. Boasting 1100 member businesses, New Orleans & Company’s goal is to cultivate and maintain a virtuous cycle between the businesses and attractions that make up the tourism industry, the visitors who invest in those businesses and attractions, and the city’s residents who benefit from tourism.

Walt Leger has been widely recognized across the state of Louisiana as a strategic thinker and fierce advocate. First, as an Assistant District Attorney in New Orleans and later as an attorney with the law firm of Leger & Shaw, Walt has been a zealous advocate for his clients and victims of violent crime for almost 20 years.

Walt was elected in the fall of 2007 to the Louisiana House of Representatives for District 91,

representing neighborhoods across the City of New Orleans. He was re-elected twice without

opposition in 2011 and 2015. In 2012, he was elected by acclamation to serve as the Speaker Pro Tempore of the Louisiana House of Representatives, the youngest member to ever serve in this 2nd highest ranking position in the Louisiana House, a role in which he served again from 2016-2020. Walt left the Legislature in 2020 due to term limits. Leger remains actively involved in community and civic activities, including serving on the Board of the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce, GNO, Inc., LSU Ogden Honors College, Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, the Louisiana Institute for Children in Families, Goodwill Industries, Early Partners Early Childhood Education, the Anti-Defamation League, Louisiana Appleseed, the Council on Criminal Justice and serves as an Adjunct Law Professor at Loyola University School of Law in New Orleans.

2024 Music Influencer Award

to

Greg Lambousy

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, NEW ORLEANS JAZZ MUSEUM

Cutting Edge - 2024-Influencer-Greg-Lambousy

NEW ORLEANS (July 14, 2024) - Greg Lambousy is the Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Before accepting this position, Lambousy was Director of Curatorial Services for the National World War II Museum. He began his career at the New Orleans Museum of Art and later moved to the Louisiana State Museum (LSM). During his twenty-year tenure at the LSM, Lambousy managed the institution’s collections of more than 500,000 artifacts and other historical items, directed improvements to collections storage at the New Orleans Mint, developed conservation and digitization projects across collections and within the Louisiana Historical Center archives, conducted oral histories and guided the selection and accession of materials related to the State’s history. Since 2016, as Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, Lambousy has led the expansion of the Museum in programming, education, exhibitions, international relations, and the development of the Gallatin Street Records label. Visitation has increased fourfold since 2016, and revenues from grants, sponsorships, and events have funded operations, while capital programs have advanced the development of the Museum’s Performance Center and Herb Alpert Education Wing, among other aspects of the Museum’s campus.

New Orleans Jazz Museum

Through dynamic interactive exhibits, multi-generational educational programming, research facilities and engaging musical performances, the music New Orleans made famous is explored in all its forms.

Through partnerships with local, national and international educational institutions, the New Orleans Jazz Museum promotes the global understanding of jazz as one of the most innovative, historically pivotal musical art forms in world history.

2024 Lifetime Achievement Award

To

DETROIT BROOKS

MUSICIAN, SONGWRITER, EVENT PROMOTER & PRODUCER

Cutting Edge - 2024-Detroit Brooks

NEW ORLEANS (6/28/2024) - Detroit Brooks is an iconic New Orleans personality; his understated persona makes it too easy to overlook him. But make no mistake, Detroit Brooks is a powerhouse as a musician, vocalist, songwriter, and founder of one of America's best tribute festivals, "The Danny Baker Banjo and Guitar Festival."

To watch Detroit Brooks play is to witness a master at his craft, and when called upon to sing as he did at the Delgado Christmas program, a performance that elicited Paul Sanchez's comment, "What a voice!" Tony Owens said it best, "Detroit and his sister Juanita Brooks both beautiful voices!"

We all recognize that having Detroit Brooks perform and call New Orleans home elevates our standards, provides leadership, and gives us thousands of hours of listening pleasure. We are elated to present him with the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award. Presentation, 7:30 PM, August 23 at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, 1225 N. Rampart St, NOLA. Free Admission RSVP preferred to: festguide@gmail.com.

Detroit Brooks - Jazz-Museum

Detroit Brooks, famed session and touring guitarist of the New Orleans music scene, has the most recognizable face in the city. An evening of his musical prowess, music critics, affection ados, or novices are testiment of his smooth yet infectious stroke based in solid fundamentals. Often admired by guitarists world-wide, Brooks’ laid-back demeanor masks one of the most heralded and sought-after performer, songwriter, and session men of our time.

Like most well-known singer/songwriters, his roots reach deep into the inner fabric of the famed “Bible Belt Superstars.” He began his career at an early age, touring with his famous family which includes his world-famous sister Juanita Brooks, of “Juanita’s Gospel Express,” as well as his acclaimed father, George A. Brooks, Sr., of the famous “Masonic Kings.” Like many accomplished guitarists, Detroit mastered his craft on the road where the performances were “long, free and continuous.” His skill, technique and experience brought him quick recognition and the opportunity to play with gospel greats like Clarence Fountain & the Five Blind Boys, Dorothy Norwood, Reverend Ernest Franklin, Albertina Walker, Raymond Myles and The Rams and the famed Zion Harmonizers.

Detroit Brooks - by-Eric-Waters

Detroit Brooks has continued to compliment his development as a musician through intense study with guitar Masters, Roy Montell and Gary Haulette, as well as ongoing  training and studies in Improvisation and Theory with Hank Mackie and Composition and Piano with Roger Dickerson. A virtual chameleon of various musical styles from Traditional Banjo to Improvisational Jazz, through Rhythm and Blues and Funk, Detroit Brooks is an unforgettable talent. A New Orleans music scene regular, Brooks’ dedication to mastery, or as we call it, “The Game,” has created the most requested Guitarist in a city whose every breath has a musical overtone.

Currently, Detroit Brooks has relinquished his well-traveled performance schedule to concentrate on his skyrocketing music-writing career. He only accepts strategic performances throughout the city and the world, and concentrates on his primary interests. In his own words: “My main interests are writing and composing. It began when I wrote a song for the American Song Festival entitled Baby Let’s Make It Happen. Later, I wrote other songs that increased my interest in writing for a group called In Flight. Following In Flight, I started writing regularly with my sister, Juanita, and brother, Mark Brooks. As we toured both statewide and internationally, I began to realize that my entire focus had turned to writing and marketing music. I still love performing live – it is my life and passion, but my heart is fulfilled in the expressions of writing and creating music.”

The New Orleans Jazz Museum's collection is the largest and most comprehensive of its kind in the world.

The Jazz Collection chronicles the music and careers of the men and women who created, enhanced and continue in the tradition of New Orleans jazz at the local, national and international levels. It consists of instruments, pictorial sheet music, photographs, records, tapes, manuscripts and other items ranging from Louis Armstrong's first coronet to a 1917 disc of the first jazz recording ever made. It includes the world's largest collection of instruments owned and played by important figures in jazz- trumpets, cornets, trombones, clarinets and saxophones played by jazz greats such as Bix Beiderbecke, Edward "Kid" Ory, George Lewis, Sidney Bechet and Dizzy Gillespie.

Other artifacts in the Jazz Collection include some 12,000 photographs from the early days of jazz; recordings in a wide variety of formats, including over 4,000 78 rpm records that date from 1905 to the mid-1950s, several thousand 12-inch LPs and 45 rpm records, approximately 1,400 reel-to-reel tapes; posters, paintings and prints; hundreds of examples of sheet music from late 19th-century ragtime to popular songs of the 1940s and 1950s - many of them first editions that became jazz standards; several hundred rolls of film featuring concert and nightclub footage, funerals, parades, and festivals; hundred of pieces of relevant ephemera; and architectural fragments from important jazz venues...
