As leaders, we sit with others in their lowest valleys, deepest struggles, and painful doubts but too often struggle to do the same for ourselves.
We are tough, or we wouldn’t be leaders! But we aren’t invincible.
Intentional soul care is what keeps us living and leading well for the long haul. Here are three ways to prioritize emotional and spiritual health.
#1 Make Space to Encounter God
How regularly do we spend time with God that has nothing to do with preparation for ministry output?
Scripture is full of leaders, including Jesus, who knew the importance of routinely removing themselves from the noise to enjoy and hear directly from God. Communing with God might look different through various seasons of life, but being in the presence of God just for the sake of being in his presence will allow our hearts to be comforted, empowered, and feel peace. Let's consider shaking up our spiritual workout and doing something different to engage God than what we normally do. Let's invite God’s voice to fall fresh on our hearts and minds.
#2 Find Someone You Trust
It is rare, yet important, that we find a trusted someone who understands leadership, who can be a safe place to say everything there is to say, and who can hold up a mirror to our blind spots.
We are often only challenged by comparing numbers, leadership strategies, or sermon series with others. But it is more crucial for us to find trusted peers that sharpen us emotionally and spiritually, while encouraging and equipping our hearts with God's truth.
#3 Take a Personal Inventory
Without self-awareness, we are often stuck. It takes noticing what is within us to take control of it.
Are there any negative life outcomes that you are experiencing and seem powerless to overcome? Do you feel stuck in habitual sin patterns that you can’t pray yourself out of? Are you experiencing doubts of God’s goodness in your life? Do you find that you are ready to throw in the towel and be done with ministry?
Honest evaluation reminds us of how important it is to lean into God and find someone who can lead us forward.
