Sports Physicals on Campus

Dear Incoming 7th through 12th grade Families,

For the first time, we have coordinated with Methodist Hospital to hold Sports Physicals on campus. The physicals are intended for incoming 7th – 12th graders for the 2024 – 2025 School Year. Sports Physicals you receive on this date will be good for the 2024 – 2025 school year. We will host this event on Monday, May 13, 2024, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM in the main upper school campus building.

There will be a $5 administrative fee for each student-athlete. Please bring in this and the exact change for the physical.

Please read the entire email and if you plan to get your physical on campus on May 13, you must RSVP by following this link. If you do not sign up for a spot by May 6, unfortunately, you will not be able to participate and will have to get your physical on your own.

  • Physicals will begin at 4:00 PM. Anyone coming for a physical must be in the doors by 4:30 PM.
  • For planning purposes, your student-athletes should stay on campus after school that day. After condensing time at 3:50 PM, student-athletes should go to the Upper School lobby to await instructions. Please plan to pick your student up at 6:00 PM but recommend that you arrive at 5:30 in case they finish early.
  • August Heart Screening is a recommended, but not required part of the physical. If you wish to have a heart screening, you must fill out and bring the attached August Heart Screening Release.
  • All participants must bring a completed SMASA PPE Release (attached)—This is your ticket into the building for the physical.

Key points to remember.

  1. Athletes must have a completed and signed medical history form (signed by the student and parent) in addition to the physical exam form for the doctor providing the PPE on the day of the event.
  2. A passing blood pressure reading is under 140/90. Any BP notated on the form that is above 140 on the top number or 90 on the bottom will be flagged for follow-up with the athlete's physician. Pulse must be 99 or below. All height, weight, and blood pressure must be taken before the day of the physicals.
  3. Forms are signed at the end of the event by the Primary Care Physicians. Any form requiring follow-up will be stamped with a red stamp on the front page to signify your need to review.

Another point of clarity. The August Heart EKG screen is specifically looking for issues related to sudden cardiac death in athletics. This screening does not look at issues related to cardiac issues from COVID-19 infections as those types of issues are not picked up with EKGs but require in-office diagnostic scans.

Sincerely,
