Dear Craig,
I hope your training is going well. We are less than 55 days out from race weekend. This is your May runner update. You can expect at least one more update from me prior to the pre-race briefing on Friday before the race up in Olympic Valley.
Another Research Opportunity
Rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney injury can occur after running in an ultramarathon. Are you interested in contributing to important scientific research that could benefit the ultramarathon community and beyond? Here’s your chance.
We are excited to announce an opportunity for ultramarathoners to participate in a study focusing on the impacts of extreme endurance exercise on kidney function in athlete performance and recovery.
Study Title: Western States Endurance Run Rhabdomyolysis & Renal Injury Surveillance Consortium (R2.I.S.C.)

Medical Facebook Educational Sessions
As we have in prior years, our Medical Director Dr Andy Pasternak will lead a series of education sessions to help runners prepare for the race. These will be specific to Western States but also useful in general for any ultrarunner. These three sessions will be shown live on our Facebook page. If you can't watch them live they will also be available to view later.

International Runner (BBQ RSVP)
A reminder to those of you coming from overseas. The city of Auburn is hosting a BBQ in Auburn on Wednesday before the race to welcome you. Please RSVP if you can make it.
River Crossing and Winter Snowpack
While the snowpack has generally been classified as an average year, we have had recent snow storms that are maintaining the water content in the snowpack. Despite a 26" cold dump of snow last weekend we still expect it to not be much of an issue on race weekend. Once the heat gets turned on the snow melts very quickly. Whether we cross the American River at mile 78 via cable or rafts is still TBD.
