This week's newsletter focuses on our continued investments in research, a GFC hero who carries on a legacy of helping others in memory of his father, and a 'Then and Now' look at GFC's infamous logo.
As you read and learn more, remember, none of this would be possible without each and every member of the Golf Fights Cancer community!

A nod to our athletic roots, GFC believes cancer research is a team sport. This is especially true when considering investments in rare and often fatal cancers without robust funding streams. Collaborative efforts among major research institutions, non-profits, and families are key in accelerating breakthroughs for patients, now and in the future.
Driven by families determined to make a difference in honor/memory of a loved one's battle with the disease, Golf Fights Cancer has invested $4 Million in research of rare cancers affecting pediatric and adult patients.
Keep reading for a quick snapshot of GFC's impact:

Glioblastoma Research
Since 2016, the Golf Fights Cancer community has invested over $1.1 Million in Glioblastoma research at The Center for Neuro-Oncology at DFCI, under the direction of Dr. David Reardon and Dr. Patrick Wen.
This extraordinary funding was raised in memory of Ginger Dreier, Bruce Gold, Dave Hovey III, Dean Jarrett, and Don Wynns and in honor of Kyle Smith and Dan Warn.

“We are grateful for the generous support from Golf Fights Cancer and their continued dedication to Dana-Farber’s mission. Their funding is providing physician-scientists in the Center for Neuro-Oncology the financial resources to accelerate the pace of discovery in brain cancer research and provide much needed hope to patients and families facing this difficult disease.”
David Reardon, MD
Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School
Clinical Director, Center for Neuro-Oncology, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

DIPG/DMG Research
Considered one of the most devastating cancer diagnoses, DIPG/DMG is a fatal pediatric brain cancer with a survival rate of only 9 to 15 months.
Following the loss of their 11-year-old daughter, Ellie, to DIPG in 2011, Nick and Lisa Kavalieros galvanized their friends, family, and community in their mission for a cure.
Raising more than $1.2 million through GFC events and initiatives, the Kavalieros family funds research at The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through The Ellie Kavalieros DIPG Research Fund.

Ewing Sarcoma Research
Instead of allowing his 15-year battle with metastatic Ewings sarcoma to serve as an impediment in life, Pete Fox chose to use it as a motivator.
Following his death in 2017, the 'Friends of Pete' have continued raising funds through Golf Fights Cancer.
Investing more than $425,000 in research at UF Health Shands Children's Hospital, Children's Cancer Therapy Development Institute, and Beat Childhood Cancer for the expansion of treatment options for Ewings sarcoma, Pete's community is keeping his legacy and desire to help others alive!

Brendon Giblin is quick to deflect to his father as his best friend and role model when offered praise for his generosity and commitment to others in need. Sadly, Kevin Giblin (known to many as 'The Gibber') died far too young, at the age of 66, following a brief battle against pancreatic cancer.
Determined to save other families from experiencing the helplessness he felt when his father was diagnosed with advanced cancer, Brendon joined Team GFC 2024 Boston Marathon to raise money for pancreatic research and awareness efforts.
Raising an incredible $140,000 for Let's Win Pancreatic Cancer, Brendon's efforts in memory of his father are helping to launch a national Nurse Navigator Program, ensuring everyone at risk or diagnosed with pancreatic cancer has easy access to current information about the latest and best treatment options available. Truly amazing and life-saving!

How's this for a great 'Then and Now'?
GFC's original logo, next to the iconic 'G-Man' logo. The current logo, unveiled in 2008, was designed by Chuck Lord with creative direction from GFC's own Eric Baldwin. We've heard many stories of complete strangers sharing a hello, united by the recognition of the iconic brand.
