| Friends and Colleagues, The Hotel Monterey was a popular spot for well-to-do travelers, and this ledger provides a picture in time of what life was like there in the early part of the 20th century. Highland County, Virginia was the locale. The summers were cooler there, and to this day it is more populated by sheep than people. It is also ruggedly beautiful. The ledger is of particular interest because in many of the hundreds of names listed, the car in which they traveled is identified by make, and in some cases by chauffeur. There are some notable Virginians listed as guests, and a number of out of state guests as well. One of the names is John Philip Sousa, the enormously popular band leader and composer of popular tunes. What would our 4th of July celebrations be without his lively music? This is fantastic artifact from a part of Virginia about which we don’t often find a lot of documentation. I hope you enjoy it! NIck | | |
