| Friends and Colleagues, On occasion we list a book which has little value … but which, because of an association, has a lot of value. That is the case with this small, quite worn copy of The New Testament. In this case, we don’t even know when or where it was published because it is missing the first few pages. But it contains a plate on the endpaper, which is both printed and handwritten. And that interesting plate tells us a lot about the book, and its owner. The Bible Society of Baltimore encouraged soldiers to fill it in – “Should I die on the battlefield … “. I find it poignant and moving. The soldiers, on both side of the Civil War, knew that this was serious business. Their potential death was real and present. Artifacts like this were carried in soldiers’ pockets, on the battlefield, in hospitals, in graves, in prisoner of war camps. Do you feel the same resonance I do? Cheers, Nick | | |
