| Friends and Colleagues, It is difficult to underestimate the impact of the media on the Civil Rights movement – television, magazines, and newspapers. A primary voice in the African-American community was the weekly newspaper The Pittsburgh Courier. It was founded in in 1907 and became one of the leading black newspapers in the country. We are pleased to offer three bound years of The Courier issued in the early 1960’s, critical years for Civil Rights in the United States. I was but a lad at the time, but I was well aware of the movement, marches, Martin Luther King, and related figures. These first hand accounts are of great importance, highlighting advances as well as the significant challenges faced by African-American citizens and their supporters – riots, the efforts of the KKK, police brutality – all related to efforts to desegregate this country. Schools of course were at the center, but so were restaurants, transportation, and virtually every other aspect of American society. They remind us starkly not to take any of our freedoms for granted. Cheers, NIck | | |
