Greetings!

We are entering into Fall in the northern hemisphere, a season of conferences for many of us. I will be participating in the Berrett-Koehler’s author retreat in September, with a chance to reconnect with many author friends who did not meet in person during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. For more than a decade the trend toward democracy in many parts of the world has been reversed by the ascendence of autocrats undermining democratic institutions and processes. A panel of scholars and practitioners who work at the intersection of leadership, followership, politics and governance will explore the strategies available for interrupting and reversing this trend.

It is no coincidence that one of the founders of the field of leadership, James MacGregor Burns, was a political scientist. Leadership and followership operate in all human arenas, but none with as much broad impact as in the realm of politics and governance.

The 24th global conference of the ILA is being held in the shadow of the US Capitol Building, on the eve of a national election. The same Capitol Building that was besieged by followers of a President who encouraged them to block the peaceful transfer of power, following an election widely regarded by the courts as lawful and fair. In the same period, there have been democratic reversals in East European countries, an increase in coup d’etats in Africa, a largely failed “Arab Spring” in the Middle East, entrenched dictatorshjps in Latin America, strong man repression in India and Indonesia, and the resurgence of one-man rule in China and Russia. This is a global epidemic requiring the wisdom and courage of leaders and followers to arrest this trend and reverse it where possible.

A panel of ILA scholars and practitioners will examine these dynamics from the perspective of both leadership and followership to examine what can be done to uphold the values of liberal democracy.

RENEWED EXECUTIVE COACHING ASSOCIATES

This month I will be transferring ownership of "vintage" Executive Coaching & Consulting Associates (ECCA) to its longest serving associate, Emily Barnes.

ON THE 200^th DAY

As always, the world is being affected by the actions of leaders and followers on the global and national stages. I have written a poem to mark the 200^th day of the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine. A poem is obviously inadequate to meeting the threat posed by rapacious authoritarian leadership, but it is a way of keeping connected to events and not forgetting those whom they directly impact. I wish you well as we navigate these times and am available if my work can contribute to yours.
