RED Still Championing High Resolution

Digital cinema camera maker RED has been pushing the boundaries of higher resolution for seventeen years, first with 4K and then with 8K. In a great new 11-minute film, cinematographer Mark Toia extols the virtues of 8K capture and the features RED has integrated into their cameras. Ben Schwarz's review is here.

Underwater Cinematography – 8K and Beyond

The most challenging aspect of filming underwater is the optics. It is the ultimate factor limiting image quality when filming below the waves. Much of the underwater content that is claimed to be 4K or 8K is limited to high-definition quality or less by its optics, even though it may be recorded on an 8K-capable camera. Fortunately, 8K-capable underwater solutions are now available - solutions used in Avatar: The Way of Water. Read our article by guest author Pawel Achtel ACS.

Sony A7R V coming next week! Same sensor, but 8K video and AI autofocus

Sony has announced the first camera in its Alpha 7 mirrorless full-frame sensor series that can capture 8K video - the a7R V. The camera can record 8K/24P video. The 60MP sensor resolution is 9504 x 6336, but the 8K capture uses a crop mode rather than over-sampling, so the full sensor is not used. The video modes are 23.98P or 25P, and each can be recorded in XAVC HS, MP4, and H.265 at 200Mbps or 400Mbps. There are 10-bit 4:2:2 video options, including S-Log3, S-Cinetone and HLG

8K Gaming Benchmarks

Reviewers evaluate the NVIDIA 4090 GPU in high-end PC setups and several 8 K-capable games in this video and this video. According to one reviewer, they look at frame rates with and without DLSS upscaling and note that native 8K gameplay can achieve very usable frame rates - more than 60 fps on all the games tested. One issue for 8K gaming: The 8K TVs are limited to 60fps over HDMI 2.1.
