Dismissal

Bussing
Please register your students to ride the school bus. Every school year, all SPS students who fit the following criteria must register to ride the bus. Students must:
  • Live within their school's attendance area AND
  • Live outside the school's established walk boundary AND
  • Intend to ride the school or activity bus AND
  • Not require specialized transportation

The bus route finder shows current bus stops and times for all schools. Please VERIFY your student’s arrival AND dismissal bus (route) number, as TO and FROM school bus (route) numbers do not always match. Most bus routes have changed, so please share with your students their bus number TO SCHOOL and HOME.

ZPASS is a valuable tool that notifies families when their student gets on and off the bus. Your student’s school office will be able to create a ZPASS card for your child.

COVID Precautions: Masks are required to ride the bus. Durham drivers, bus attendants and students will wear masks at all times. Windows and vents will be open for improved airflow. Seating charts will be required for all buses.

Kindergarten Protocol: Kindergarten families will be asked to have a family member OVER THE AGE OF 12 present at the bus stop for the first TEN DAYS of school in order for kindergarteners to be let off the bus.

  • If no family member is present at the bus stop, bus drivers will make a second attempt if time permits.
  • After the second attempt, the student will be returned to the school and parents will be notified.
  • This safety requirement is in effect for the FIRST TEN DAYS OF SCHOOL (through Sept. 16, 2021)

Laptops
This year’s Laptop Checkout Form requires a parent/guardian to acknowledge responsibility for district devices checked out to students for use at home. Laptop insurance is no longer needed as we have purchased Accidental Damage Insurance for student devices. The fines and fee schedule can be found in the new Parent Agreement.
This year, students in middle and high school will check out laptops for use at home. Elementary schools will decide when laptops should be checked out to students. Please check with your student’s school if you have questions about laptop checkout.

Immunizations

All students must have current immunizations or a certificate of exemption on file before school starts. If your student needs medication or a treatment administered at school, a new health care plan is required every school year. Students will be excluded from school until all required documents and medication(s) are in place. Students do not need the COVID vaccine to attend school.
