RED SOX-DODGERS WORLD SERIES HISTORY
GOES BACK A LONG WAY

By Doak Ewing

The Red Sox and Dodgers (the old Brooklyn Robins, that is) have met in the World Series once before - more than 100 years ago in 1916!   It was the first appearance for Brooklyn in the Fall Classic and the fourth for the Red Sox, World Series winners in 1903, 1912 and 1915.   With stars Harry Hooper and Duffy Lewis in the outfield, 18-game winner Carl Mays and a twenty-one-year-old lefty pitcher named Babe Ruth, the Red Sox were favored to win their second World Series in a row.

Ruth, who only appeared once in the '15 series (1 AB as a PH), suddenly blossomed into the top southpaw in the American League with 23 wins, 9 shutouts and a 1.75 ERA in over 320 innings!   During the season the future home run king also tied for the team lead with three home runs.   It was the dead ball era, and the entire team combined for 14 - even in cozy Fenway Park - now the oldest ballpark in the major leagues.

The Red Sox won the opener at Boston, 6-5 behind Ernie Shore and Carl Mays.   Game two matched Brooklyn's Sherry Smith and Ruth in one of the most tenacious pitching duels in series history.   Ruth himself tied the game 1-1 in the third on an infield out, scoring Everett Scott who had just tripled.   From that point on, both pitchers shut the door, and at the end of nine innings the score was still tied 1-1.   At the end of 13 innings, it was still tied 1-1 with Ruth and Smith still going strong.   Ruth got the Robins out in the 14th, but then Smith faltered, walking Dick Hoblitzell for the fourth time in the game and then giving up a double to pinch hitter Del Gainor which won the game 2-1.

The series scene shifted to Brooklyn for games three and four, with the Robins' Jack Combs and Jeff Pfeffer combining for a 4-3 win in game three.   But this was to be Brooklyn's only win.   Next day, the Red Sox won again 6-2 on a 5-hitter by Dutch Leonard, and the teams moved back to Boston for game five.   This game was played at Braves Field because of the larger seating capacity over Fenway Park, and a record World Series crowd (at the time) of 43,620 came out on Columbus Day to see Ernie Shore fire a three-hitter and end the series with a 4-1 triumph.   Although the Red Sox won, and Babe Ruth pitched 14 innings allowing only one run, the Robins had the series' leading hitter, a refreshingly eccentric right field character named Casey Stengel who hit .364!

Boston starts the 2018 World Series with an 8-4 record as opposed to a 6-13 mark for the Dodgers.   Only the New York Yankees have reached the Fall Classic more often than the Dodgers, who have tied the National League mark of 20 held by the Giants, another two-city franchise.

Just reaching the World Series is a herculean feat in this era of double wild-cards and multiple qualifying playoffs.   Any team that wins a World Championship must win 11 postseason games and sometimes more.   The 2018 Dodgers had to play 162 regular season games, win a National League West division title tie-breaker against Colorado, beat the Atlanta Braves three times in a four game Division series, and then beat the Milwaukee Brewers on the road in the seventh game of the N.L. Championship Series.   To win the World Series for the first time in 30 years will mean beating a Boston team that led the majors in wins, runs, hits, doubles, batting, slugging and frenzied fans.

Let's all pick a favorite, then sit back and watch to see what happens!
