Ask an Esch Expert: Erika Forseth
Coverage for Flood Damage

With the recent flooding, we have been receiving calls regarding what is covered, can I get flood insurance, and more.  Below are a few common questions along with the answers which we hope you'll find helpful.

Q.  Isn't flood covered on my homeowners insurance policy?
A.  No, flood damage to both your home and personal property is excluded from coverage on ALL homeowners policies.  Flood insurance is only available through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) that is overseen by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency).

Q.  Can I even get flood insurance if I'm not in a flood plain?
A.  Yes, as long as your community participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).  In fact, if you are not in a designated flood plain, the cost of flood insurance is considerably lower than those that are.

Q.  Do I have to buy flood insurance for my car?
A.  No, flood damage is covered under "Comprehensive" physical damage on your personal auto policy.
