Michael Crawford, President |
Michael has lived in Jefferson Park since 1992. He is currently a partner at the law firm of Mesch Clark Rothschild and was the Ward 3 City Council person from 1995-1997.
His main goal as president will be to try and get Park Avenue redone from Speedway to Grant, and also get our neighborhood streets paved with the new bond money available from the City of Tucson.
Jefferson Park Association welcomes Michael for the 2018 term. So much to do Michael! We are glad you are on board!

|
Erin has been a resident of Jefferson Park since 2016. She is taking on the treasurer job after serving as co-editor of the Jefferson Park E-news and Representative for Area 3.
She is on the Green Committee and has helped with tree plantings and the Edison parklet clean-ups.

Colleen has been a resident of Jefferson Park since 1977. This retired school administrator is taking on the Vice Presidency job after serving as JPNA secretary last year. She enlivened the Red Tag committee by sending out letters for all loud party, loud music and red tag calls. With the cooperation of the TPD red tag Unit and the UofA there has been a 183% drop in the number of calls from 2016 to 2017.

Rosemary has bravely taken on the job of recording the minutes for the JPNA meetings. She lived on Santa Rita then spent years in several different places. She returned to Tucson in November 2016 and now lives on Lester. Rosemary helps on the Clean Committee.

Joan has lived on Edison Street since 1972, raised children who went to Jefferson Park and the University of Arizona. She is a retired curriculum specialist and administrator. She has served a three year term as JPNA president and edited newsletters for the neighborhood for 15 years.

Mary was a registered nurse at UMC (now Banner) for most of her 25 year career-- walking 10 minutes there and back. She has two daughters. For fun there's Scrabble, Dominos, reading and movies. She says she goes to "L.A. Fitness three times a week keeping the old joints as flexible as possible." Thanks for minding our Little Free Library!

Jon has lived in Jeff Park since 1985. He worked for the UofA for many years teaching ESL (English as Second Language) and now works full time serving the needs of international students and scholars.
He is involved with the UofA International Student Fellowship, that has a once-a-month community service project, which has involved the Jeff Park school or neighborhood many times.

Jefferson Park resident since 2003. Laurel is retired from CODAC Health Recovery and Wellness where she was the Sr. Director of Quality Management. She also was in landscaping and greenhouse management. She bikes, is an avid reader and works with Desert Museum as a tortoise sanctuary. She works with spay and neuter programs to help low-income pet owners get their dogs and cats spayed and neutered. Great to have you aboard!

For the past three years Judy has brought refreshments and rounded up raffle donations for the quarterly meetings. She is a manufacturer's representative and has also been an area four representative for the past three years.
Thanks for twelve quarterly meetings with food and fun!

We have been without an Area 5 Rep for quite a while-thanks for stepping in! Joanne has worked with the neighborhood assn since she retired from AZ Cancer Center. She has spearheaded the Clean Committee and works with Tucson Clean and Beautiful for the park adoption. She is co-editor of the Jefferson Park E-news.

Lisa is a 40 year resident of Jefferson Park. She has a background in theatre & radio/TV. She is currently on the Board of Directors for TRRG , a Precinct Committee person for the Pima County Democratic Party, our representative to the CCRC, and serves on the Lend a Hand Board. In her spare time she makes pottery and schedules the roll-offs for JP!

Suzanne's leadership has guided the JPNA for many years. she has served as VP and area representative. She has chaired the nominating committee
for 4+years--a difficult job.
Suzanne has lived in her JP home for 28 years and became active in the assn after her retirement from the Job Corp Center. In retirement she now teaches piano.
|
We believe Minette gets the prize for longest residency in the neighborhood. She remembers when the roads were dirt! She has advocated continually for Jefferson Park, helped get R-1 zoning interpreted to eliminate mini-dorms and continues to help vision the northern boundary of Jefferson Park with a linear bike/walkway.
|
Trish was one of the first to cooperate and install a water harvesting feature on Vine through the Watershed Management.. She is currently the new coordinator of "Lend a Hand" which provides services to several of our senior residents.
Trish is recently retired from the City of Tucson and already we have her at work in the neighborhood.

Want to know about Jefferson Park?..ask Joan. She has served as president, treasurer and secretary of JPNA. Additionally, she is chair of our very important Land Use Committee which monitors JP's Neighborhood Preservation Zone.
Her work with small loans to developing nations keeps her traveling but she still finds time to monitor the list serve and set up two JP Facebook pages.

Second to his love for all old cars is Bob's continued advocacy for the protection and enhancement of the Jefferson Park neighborhood.
He also serves on the Land Use Committee and his expertise on city rules and regs is critical.
He also serves on the JTED board which promotes the technical skills of high school students.

JUST A THOUGHT... Jefferson Park is highly dependent upon those above and many others. I believe we could have lost the fine mix of students, retired folks and families that make our community strong. Only because of JP volunteers does Tucson have the definition for R-1 zoning that prevents mini-dorms. Only because of many hours of hard work and personal donations does Jefferson Park have an historic designation, historic street signs,and a neighborhood plan with an NPZ overlay (one of only two in Tucson). Volunteers lobbied long and hard to retain the Jefferson Park School, as a school, when TUSD closed its doors. There is still lots to do--north and south borders as green ways, redistricting to preserve our historic status, a traffic circle to prevent flooding, vigilance and education to maintain the historic structures that make this neighbor special.
All of us have periods in our lives when we have freedom to take on other challenges--many after retirement from nine-to-five jobs. Some of us can juggle both work and volunteerism. It is a personal choice. We are where we are today as a community because people gave time and expertise--a little or a lot--it all added up. Some say Jefferson Park is on the brink of becoming one of the premier neighborhoods in Tucson, I say we already are. And I am grateful to all the new folks who have joined the effort.

Farewell Alan Adler
Alan and his wife, Albert, have lived in Jefferson Park Neighborhood many years. Unfortunately for us, they will soon be moving to Hawaii. Alan was a Director on the Lend A Hand Board. He did a wide variety of activities which helped elderly individuals -- building wheelchair ramps, doing household repairs, providing fresh fruits & vegetables twice a month, giving rides to medical appointments, etc, etc... To express his own creativity, Alan is an accomplished "wood turner," making exquisitely beautiful wooden bowls. Aloha Alan & Albert. Take with you our very best wishes!

ARE YOU UP FOR A BRISK WALK?.
The Clean Committee does a brisk walk (some of us meander and chat) on the east side of the neighborhood once a month to pick up litter. If you would like to be notified of the clean-ups, ask to be added to the notification list by e-mailing Joanne Osuna at

It's a gratifying way to spend an hour -come when the spirit moves you!

Tucson Clean and Beautiful staff, Tom Ellis and Katie Gannon, met with neighborhood representatives, Ward III staff, and the results of the on-line survey to begin the plans for the proposed linear park from Park Ave to Santa Rita. The six landscape plans submitted by UA graduate class plus the on-line comments were considered in consult with a city engineer to determine what features were possible. Lots of details to consider. For example, the new regulations say Decomposed Granite is no longer ADA compliant. Who knew?
Next TCB will be clarifying the steps to completing the initial requirements for a survey and preliminary grading. What a great example of the City, the Transportation Department, RTA, and neighborhoods all working together to create a better Tucson!

Of Interest....free tax preparation

Ward III Office every Saturday beginning February 3 and ending April 14.
Pima County is again teaming with United Way to offer free tax-preparation assistance to anyone with a family income under $66,000.
The Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program enables taxpayers to bring in their documents, which are reviewed, scanned, and uploaded to a secure server. It usually takes about 20 minutes. Seven to 10 days later (sometimes faster), the return is securely emailed or can be picked up at a VITA site.
No appointments necessary and it's first-come, first- served.
"Taxes can be a headache and time-consuming," Bazata said. "The United Way's Valet VITA program simplifies the process while providing the highest quality service - for free. For low-income families, using VITA means avoiding financial predators, ensuring they qualify for important tax credits, and keeping all of their tax return. That is a poverty-busting formula."
Taxpayers must bring:
*Picture I.D. for taxpayer and spouse. Both spouses must be present to sign documents! Social Security card for EACH family member
*Proof of income, including W2s and 1099s
