Good Reads for Business
List Provided from the friendly folks at our
Click on the books title for a link to check out the book from the library.
Briana Borten and her husband, Dr. Peter Borten, have written a comprehensive guide to having more joy, more success, and less overwhelm. (Yes, please!)
This book is beautifully done and runs through the creation of more structure, "sweetness," and space in your life. It's packed with lots of guidance that covers multiple wisdom traditions so you can "choose your own adventure" for what you need right now because each person's path and journey to a "Well Life" is totally unique.
Talks about creating your business around your life instead of settling for your life around your business.
And along those lines, the Unconventional Life Summit is bringing together top millennial entrepreneurs to share the strategies they've used to build successful, 7- and 8-figure, impact-focused companies while living unique, unconventional lives and writing their own rules.
You'll hear from entrepreneurs like John Lee Dumas from Entrepreneur On Fire, Dane Maxwell from the Foundation, Brian D. Evans from Influencive, and other unique millennial entrepreneurs, including two of our own from the Evolved EcoVerse.
My co-founder of NEXT, Dmitriy Kozlov (Dima), is also sharing his story and teaching a masterclass that reveals his best business practices. (On top of NEXT, he's also built a 7-figure web development firm and helped me get out Evolved Enterprise to the world.) Plus, alongside Dima, you'll hear from Zion Kim (a 25-year-old serial entrepreneur and the new president of Maverick NEXT)

Rework  by Jason Friend and David Heinemeier Hansson

Rework  shows you a better, faster, easier way to succeed in business. Read it and you'll know why plans are actually harmful, why you don't need outside investors, and why you're better off ignoring the competition.  You'll learn how to be more productive, how to get exposure without breaking the bank, and tons more counter-intuitive ideas that will inspire and provoke you. Rework is the perfect playbook for anyone who's ever dreamed of doing it on their own. Hardcore entrepreneurs, small-business owners, people stuck in day jobs they hate, victims of "downsizing," and artists who don't want to starve anymore will all find valuable guidance in these pages.

Do you ever find that you are not the patient, compassionate problem solver you believe yourself to be? Are you surprised at how irritated or flustered the normally unflappable you become in the presence of a specific colleague at work? In Triggers, his most powerful and insightful book yet, Goldsmith shows how we can overcome the trigger points in our lives, and enact meaningful and lasting change.

In an eye-opening and thoroughly engaging read, Bailey offers a treasure trove of insights and over 25 best practices that will help you accomplish more.  Including: slowing down to work more deliberately; shrinking or eliminating the unimportant; the rule of three; striving for imperfection; scheduling less  time for important tasks; the 20 second rule to distract yourself from the inevitable distractions; and the concept of productive  procrastination.

Quote of the Month
"In a real sense all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be... This is the inter-related structure of reality." ~
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

A message from Chamber & Main Street Director Germaine Ross

Wow, we are already starting the third week of the New Year.

As you look at 2017 stretching out before you -
are you ready for it?

I do hope YOU are having an awesome beginning to the year. And that you made plans to make 2017 your best year ever!  We hope that this newsletter will continue to be a glimmer of hope in your inbox each month as we illuminate what is emerging in our small town area--more people and businesses
stepping up to
move from "me" to "we":
-collaborating for a healthier business environment
-sharing ways to
take action to make our community even better
-supporting each other in creating more quality of living and working here .

Your Chamber is on your team and we're thrilled to be able to support you.

Organizational Changes
in Your Chamber & MainStreet Program
Organizational Chart
For the past 20 years, Osceola has combined the Chamber and MainStreet organizations to work together. While their missions sometimes differ, we have been able to find common ground and work together. The Model for the Chamber and MainStreet is changing. It's no longer about buying a membership that is purely transactional or hosting one event after another or a handful of folks doing everything. It's about helping more people come together to create the kind of place where people and businesses can thrive. While we still intend to offer really good value for a membership investment, we are so pleased to have more members and employees stepping up to get involved in this new model. It is about improving our shared quality of life...and that trickles into so many levels- tourism, workforce retention and talent attraction-important issues for our members.  As a result we've expanded our committees- where this work will get done.
Our approach is based on these simple beliefs:
a) the most important asset in our community is our human capitol.
b) within our membership we have smart, creative, kind, generous people who want to help and
c) community happens when people talk to each other. And do good things together.
Find More info about how you can get involved. Click Here
In Appreciation of Past Leaders
Five of our long time board members completed their terms at the end of 2016-
Timm Johnson, who has served as President since 2009, Mark Erickson who has served as treasurer since 2009,
Tim Pauley and Margaret Pennings who have served on various committees since 2009 and 2010 respectfully.
Bob Wolf also moved on  earlier in 2016.Together these individuals have given countless volunteer hours of dedication and expertise on the board to make our organization, town and community better. All of them have supported the Chamber and MainStreet Programs and brought a voice of wisdom, calm and reason. While we will miss them, we know it is healthy for an organization to make changes, bringing in new energy and ideas. Fortunately, t hese five leaders will continue to be involved in the Chamber in different capacities. We are deeply grateful for their leadership, hard work and friendship over the years.

And we also want to thank Anna Lund who has been our administrative assistant for most of 2016. She brought great organization and enthusiasm to this new position. We appreciate her work and hope to continue to see Anna involved as a volunteer. We  wish her the very best in her future work and professional growth.
Past Year Chamber Review & Highlights Report
