Rakes, Rogues, & Rascals: Men Behaving Badly in Baroque Britain

MUSIC, 20 FEB: Rakes, Rogues, & Rascals: Men Behaving Badly in Baroque Britain at Pangea, New York City, New York, USA • ArtsEarth

Before the stiffening of the proverbial upper lip, the musical celebration of vice was a lively corner of English entertainment. From London pubs to the Royal Court and every class in between, post-Restoration Britons reveled in tales of the foppish, the caddish, the rakish, and the altogether disgraceful. Let our incorrigible musicians, bass-baritone Ian Pomerantz, lutenists Ryan Closs and Hideki Yamaya,, dissolve your post-Valentine’s Day regrets in the lovely music and spicy lyrics of Purcell, Leveridge, D’Urfey, Handel, and others in the club room of the casual and classy Pangea. Huzzah!

  • Ian Pomerantz – baritone
  • Ryan Closs – lute, baroque guitar
  • Hideki Yamaya – theorbo

*The house opens at 6:00 PM for food and beverage service. Please join us for dinner. Seating is first come first served. PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY.

Steven Bernstein: Sexmob

MUSIC, 22+23 FEB: Steven Bernstein: Sexmob at SFJAZZ Center, San Francisco, California, USA • ArtsEarth

Trumpeter Steven Bernstein’s week begins with his long-running band Sexmob, playing a cross-section of fresh material and selections from their repertoire.

The quartet has honed a singular sound over two decades marked by high-energy, protean group improvisation and rollicking grooves unlike any other band on the planet. Originally formed for a weekly residency at New York’s Knitting Factory, they’ve earned a devoted fan base with boisterous deconstructions of tunes by a shaggy menagerie of pop acts, from Abba and James Brown to Prince and Elvis Presley, and subversively re-imagined film music of Nino Rota and John Barry. They’ve released nine superlative albums for the Ropeadope, Columbia, Rex, Thirsty Ear, and Royal Potato labels.
