The Barn Theatre is excited to announce that it is re-introducing its Studio Series Productions this season. These special event performances, part of the Barn's fundraising initiatives, are presented as staged readings in a black box setting, and provide an opportunity to explore interesting, different, and often off-beat theater. As a bonus, it gives experienced actors who are unable to commit to main stage productions an opportunity to perform. The Barn also encourages acting novices to join in the fun and learn the craft.

Holidays with a Twist includes four short plays, all with a holiday theme. The plays are quirky, humorous and contain adult themes and language. These four plays will leave you laughing and in appreciaton of the joy of the season.

Mrs. Claus - The stress of the holidays through the eyes of Mrs. Claus.

Jingle Bell Express – Holiday Village Santa employee meets a co-worker for happy hour at local tavern.

Epiphany – A modern version of the three wise men at the nativity scene

Re-Gifters – Friends re-gift a seemingly worthless holiday present

The dates for the first production, Holidays with A Twist, are Friday & Saturday, December 9th and 10th at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, December 11th at 2:00 p.m.. General admission tickets are $20 and will help the Barn provide the community with something fun and different for the holidays.

To purchase tickets for our special event, visit the Barn online at www.barn-theatrte.com or call our box office at 772-287- 4884. Proceeds from our Studio Series Productions are earmarked to help pay for the Barn’s capital improvement projects.

Riverside Theatre for Kids! Ideal for kids aged 2-5, but entertaining for parents and the whole family, too! Our theatre’s student performers will present original interactive fairy tale plays. Throughout the shows, young audience members will be encouraged to join in the stories in fun and exciting ways.

Bid for Ballet Vero Beach

Our auction team has worked harder than ever this year to assemble a collection of nearly forty items and packages. Everything has been fully donated, so 100% of the proceeds benefit the expansion of our education and community engagement programs in our 10th Season, and beyond. Bidding is open only through December 11.

Gallery Veritas and Art Library at 1420 20th Street in downtown Vero Beach is associated with Studio on 60, a collective of artists, and shows the work of each of them. On exhibit until the New Year are the large, expressive paintings of MaryLou Mullan, who often paints outdoors, “capturing the landscapes and seascapes of our county in a vibrant style reminiscent of Vincent Van Gogh,” said gallery owner Xaque Gruber. In January, Gallery Veritas will feature a group show of the artists of Studio on 60.

Gruber rescued the art library formerly housed at the Vero Beach Museum of Art in 2017, when the library was being phased out. Gruber said, “The name ‘Veritas’ means ‘the truth’ in Latin as well as being the root of the word ‘Vero.’ Annual membership in the lending library is ten dollars.

This new endeavor for the artist is located just behind Coffeehouse 1420 on SR 60 in downtown Vero Beach. Studio on 60, is next door to the gallery. Gruber shared space in the studio until recently with artist Barry Shapiro.

A member of Cultural Council of Indian River County, Vero Beach Art Club, and Friends of Contemporary Art (FOCA), Gruber teaches watercolor, mixed media, printmaking, and art history at the Vero Beach Museum of Art and was among the first art therapists to teach to chemotherapy patients in Florida, at Florida Cancer Specialists. Call 323-547-1188 for an appointment to visit Gallery Veritas and Art Library.

The Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast (TCM) is in the heart of Indian Riverside Park in Jensen Beach. The Children's Museum opened in August 2008 and has welcomed over 400,000 visitors and over 50,000 students have experienced the power of education through our field trip and outreach programs. The museum continues to grow and flourish each year. Future plans include: expansion of the explorers gallery.

With a mission to offer children and families a place to explore and learn through hands-on, interactive activities, the Children’s Museum exhibits will reflect Florida’s unique character.

The Children’s Museum is a family-friendly place that features bright, creative and hands on exhibits designed to spark discovery and creative thinking. Like children’s museums throughout the country, the Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast, exists to support the very simple, but profound truth, children learn through play and that for the youngest among us, play provides the essential foundation for lifelong learning.

A.C.T. Studio Theatre celebrates the holiday season with Andrew J. Fenady's radio play "Yes Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus" Dec. 9 - 18. "Virginia" (Sophia Staniec) writes her letter asking if Santa Claus exists. Show features a cast of 14. Tickets and info: actstudiotheatre.com; (772) 932-8880. Tickets $26. Students' and children's tickets available. Roaming the Web

LEGOs are not only for stepping on in bare feet or creating a futuristic city. For the gift giver with deep pockets, there’s now the LEGO Titanic! At $680, it probably won’t appear under everyone’s tree this year. And, according to the LEGO website, the 9090-piece kit is on backorder but expected to be available in January.

The slightly more affordable Colosseum, at $550 and 9036 pieces, is ready for stuffing in stockings right now, according to the website.

Thanks to the website mymodernmet.com for the lead to this.

Postcards Save World History

Hang on to that stash of old postcards!

From The Source, USVI:

In a recent lecture in St. Thomas, Katherine Hamilton-Smith, founding curator of the world’s largest public collection of postcards, Teich Archives, explained the documentary power and significance of picture postcards worldwide.

Hosted by the Caribbean Genealogy Library, the lecture highlighted the digitization of the Michael and Jane Sheen Danish West Indies-U.S. Virgin Islands postcard collection.

The lecturer shared the significance of postcards, detailing how postcards serve as some of the only images of what has happened historically.

“If it were not for the phenomenon of picture postcards … we would likely not have images remaining to us,” said Hamilton-Smith. “The very commonness of them is what gives them their documentary power.”

Before Retreating From Kherson, Russian Troops Emptied One of Ukraine’s Top Museums of Nearly 15,000 Objects

They also targeted other cultural venues in the region in recent weeks.

Taylor Dafoe, November 14, 2022

According to the Ukrainian military’s National Resistance Center, Russian soldiers looted nearly 15,000 objects from the Oleksiy Shovkunenko Kherson Art Museum and other cultural venues in the region two weeks ago. The move came just days after Vladimir Putin imposed martial law in Kherson and three other Ukrainian territories, effectively legalizing the “evacuation” of cultural heritage.

The Kherson Art Museum confirmed the theft in a Facebook post ….

Prior to the incident, the museum’s collection included religious paintings from the 17th and 20th centuries, Ukrainian art from the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and contemporary art from the last 100 years. In a media briefing addressing the theft, the head of the Kherson City Council’s Department for Culture, Svitlana Dumynska, called it “one of the most impressive collections of regional museums in Ukraine.”
