Applications to Open on May 1

Our next artist opportunities open on May 1 with a July 1 deadline to submit.

The opportunities are:

Rhode Island Teaching Artist Roster is a directory of teaching artists who have been approved by public panels to work in educational settings. The State's Arts Council has endorsed the teaching artists' skills and credentials when they are added to the Roster. Educational sites and individuals use the Roster as a resource to engage an artist for an arts learning project.

General Operating Support for Artists provides grants for artists to work toward larger, self-identified goals in their art practice. This funding is unrestricted, meaning artists can use the funds to support their goals however they need. This program includes a cohort community of current grantees, with meetings and learning opportunities that are focused on the grantees’ needs. Each year, three artists are selected for this program, for a total of nine artists receiving yearly grants at any given time.

Jennifer, 'Break a Leg' at the National Poetry Out Loud Competition

Portsmouth Abbey School Junior, Jennifer Shon, R.I.'s 19th Poetry Out champion, to travel to Washington, D.C., to compete in the national Poetry Out Loud competition, April 30-May 2.

Shon will be competing with high school students from throughout the country for a $20,000 prize. Her first stop will be the regional semifinals. The winners of the semifinal round advance to the Finals.

In March, Shon won the Rhode Island championship with the recitation of "Say Grace" by Emily Jungmin Yoon. Read about Shon's win at the Greenwich Odeum last month.

More About Poetry Out Loud

Art Connection R.I. on Display at the Atrium Gallery at One Capitol Hill

Works by the Art Connection Rhode Island, Pawtucket, to be on display from May 2 to July 10 at the Atrium Gallery at One Capitol Hill. The exhibition features original artworks from local and/or regional artist donors and includes acrylic and oil paintings, mixed media and collage work, photographs, prints and monotypes.

Mark your calendar for the Opening Reception on Thursday, June 13, 5 p.m.-7 p.m., in the Atrium Gallery, first floor of the state’s Administration Building, One Capitol Hill, Providence. There will be a Meet the Artist on Thursday, June 20, noon-1 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

The performers for the opening reception will be John Christopher Brooks, Providence, and John DeBossu, Pawtucket, of Brooks and DeBossu.

Assets for Artists Workshops for R.I. Artists

Assets for Artists, a program of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), offers online and in-person workshops to address challenges and opportunities facing artists in our region. The organization just added two spring workshops. They are:

Two-part Project Management 101 with Ana Tinajero, April 30 and May 2, online, and provides an introduction into the basic building blocks of planning and monitoring a project.
Art of Licensing with Allison Cole, May 13, online and covers surface design and art licensing, and how artists can get their designs on a wide variety of products by partnering with different companies.

New Rules for Artists and

Gig Workers!

The rollout of new FEMA rules, which expand assistance to artists and other self-employed people after a disaster, is progressing. You still can assist in creating the rules. Visit Help Shape FEMA's New Rules for Artists and Gig Workers! to find resources to assist you in creating your own comments.

You will find written documentation from NCAPER/CERF+, which you are free to use as a springboard. You may find there are other things you want to suggest based on what you know about your arts community. The more detail about your own constituents, the better FEMA will understand what needs to be updated or adjusted. The information is due by July 22.
