Composer Gity Razaz’s new song cycle, Flowing Down the Widening Rings of Being, enjoys a premiere performance by the Israeli Chamber Project with Lebanese-American tenor Karim Sulayman at Meany Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Washington. The song cycle is based on the writings of Rumi and Rainer Maria Rilke and is commissioned by the Israeli Chamber Project. Hailed by The New York Times as “ravishing and engulfing,” Razaz’s music is deeply influenced by the constantly changing, at times tumultuous, realities of the world, including her identity and personal journey as an immigrant.

Join vocal artist Odeya Nini for ODE, an interdisciplinary vocal performance in The CJM’s Yud Gallery. Drawing on the sounds of her Yemenite Jewish ancestry and playing off of the unique acoustic properties of the gallery space, Nini will create vocal improvisations in response to the Judaica on view in Radiant Practices: Illuminating Jewish Traditions. Visitors will experience how song can connect us to our bodies, ancestry, and memories.

For this special Joe Henderson Festival Hotplate, saxophonist Ranzel Merritt performs the immortal music from Henderson’s 1966 Blue Note album.
A serious young musician, composer, and producer, Merritt is the son of acclaimed drummer Ranzel Merritt, Sr., veteran of work with David Murray and Pharoah Sanders. The saxophonist was mentored by Murray and is a former member of the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars, now a teaching artist with the SFJAZZ Education department and alumni of the New School in New York.

The stellar faculty cast includes the SFJAZZ Collective’s Warren Wolf, David Sanchez, Edward Simon, and Matt Brewer, along with luminaries Joshua Redman, Carmen Bradford, Julian Lage, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, Matt Wilson and many others.
This concert will feature pianist and SFJAZZ Collective member Edward Simon, and saxophonist and RJAM Executive Director Jason Hainsworth.

An iconic artist of our time, Grammy Award-winning soprano Patricia Racette conjures the timeless power and viscerally authentic impact of French singer Édith Piaf (1915-1963), whose music gave voice to the mid-twentieth century, transcending language and borders. “For me, Piaf is a shining example through words and music. Great artist. Great actor. Great chanteuse,” says Ms. Racette. “I want to evoke Piaf without ever crossing the line of trying to imitate her. I want to create an experience.”

Steinway Society – The Bay Area presents one of the world’s foremost chamber ensembles, Trio Wanderer. To meet the needs of a diverse community of patrons, Steinway Society also offers a streaming option to watch the concert live and provide “unlimited listens” for 48 hours afterward.
The Trio’s qualities became obvious at once: a piano bursting with inspiring energy, a wonderfully intense and lyrical violin, and a cello with deep, full sounds. Their style can further be characterized by its typically French distinctness and airy lightness.

Huellas is an Afro-Peruvian dance theater performance co-created by Carmen Roman and Pierr Padilla Vásquez, inspired by the ancestral dance Son de los Diablos. The Son de los Diablos is the first manifestation of resilience for African descendants in Peru. It represents a fight for culture and identity and a way to keep ancestral memory alive and shares the story of decolonization, resistance and of connecting to ancestral memory. Huellas centers Afro-Peruvian rhythms, instruments, and dances to bring visibility to the African Diaspora in Latinx communities.

For this exciting recital, pianist Ting Luo will perform both classical favorites and new works, with compositions from Schubert and J.S. Bach, as well as several pieces from contemporary and new piano music, featuring pieces by Philip Glass, Terry Riley, and Ingrid Stölzel. A special highlight will be the inclusion of prepared piano classics by John Cage. Additionally, Ting Luo will showcase selected compositions from the New Arts Collaboration 2023 season, including pieces by Xuesi Xu, Dylan Findley, and Cole Reyes.

Telling the tale of a grieving river hermit and his homunculus like creation, The WaterBoy, Prose and Confluence is a surreal performance and existential experiment utilizing theatrical scenes, projections, soundscapes, live music, essay, and visual art to explore the profound grief which stems from an inability to articulate pain to others. With musicality as the throughline the Klanghaus team crafts an experience that is intimate, soft and meditative while maintaining a childlike playfulness.

Experience Black gospel music with Master Artist Terrance Kelly. Founded in September of 2013, the Oakland Interfaith Community Choir now has over 150 members! OICC was created to fill a need in the community for a low-commitment, high-energy group that follows the same mission as its parent choir: to inspire joy and unity among all people through Black gospel and spiritual music.
Rehearse once a month from February to June and August to December. OICC performs 4 to 5 times throughout the year in various venues and churches in the Bay Area, and have included the Paramount Theatre, Mission Dolores Basilica, and outreach to inmates at Santa Rita Jail.

Multiple Voices is the first public artwork in the United States by Eva Schlegel, the Austria-based artist known for engineering steel and mirrors into spectacular, architectonic sculptures. Working with materials similar to the arts center’s new building, Schlegel created a series of polished and translucent surfaces that catch and reflect light and parts of the surrounding environment, encouraging visitors to gather, play and learn. Poems by Steve Bellin-Oka, Kimberly Blaeser, and Joy Harjo appear in blurred form on glass panels, registering each poem as part of the sculpture, but rendered cryptic to the viewer.
