Postsecondary Counseling Newsletter

August 19th, 2024

Seniors and Families,

Welcome back (almost)! I hope you had a fun summer and took some time to recharge for the big year ahead. I look forward to making the hike up the Nature Trail with you for Senior Sunrise tomorrow morning. I wanted to take the opportunity to send you some important information before we dive into the week.

Mark your Calendar: Fall Senior Postsecondary night

Wednesday, September 4th

5:30-7:00pm

AHS Commons

We will discuss a timeline for senior year, the college application process, work based learning opportunities/LINK 2.0, and Financial aid/FAFSA.

Additionally, please take a look at the rest of the dates below and add them to your calendar.

Group instruction time: I will be spending time in Humanities on 8/26 to get Seniors started on the college application process. This year I will be taking over core classes one period each month to provide group instruction/assistance with the postsecondary process.

Office hours: This Fall, I will be holding office hours dedicated to Seniors only on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30-3:30. Most Seniors do not need to take an X-block, so this is a great time during which I can assist you with your college applications and scholarships. If you are a Senior who has to take an X-block, feel free to schedule additional individual time with me when needed for help.

Individual meetings: I am scheduling individual appointments with Seniors. I will meet with each senior individually this year at least twice, but students are welcome to meet with me as many times as they need. Please use THIS LINK to schedule an appointment with me. Parents and Caregivers are more than welcome to attend these meetings. Please coordinate with your student about scheduling if you are a parent/caregiver that would like to attend. I am also happy to arrange for parents/caregivers to attend virtually when requested.

SAT

ICYMI: check out this email I sent over the summer about SAT scores, what they mean, and if you should consider retaking.

If you would like to retake the SAT:

Fee waivers are available! If you qualify for free or reduced lunch or if paying for the test would present a financial hardship for your family, you can get a fee waiver in one of two ways:

  1. Let me know and I will give you a fee waiver code to use when you register.
  2. Request a Fee waiver on your own directly from the College Board: Learn more.

If you plan to apply early action or early decision, you should retake the test no later than Oct. 5th. If you plan to apply regular decision, you can take the test in November or December.

College Fairs

You are all strongly encouraged to attend the two upcoming local college fairs. College fairs are a great opportunity to have conversations with admissions officers from college to which you plan to apply as well as a great way to help you finalize your list.

This fair is open to any high school student in the area to attend! Come find me at the fair and get a prize from me for attending afterward. Everyone who attends will also be put into a drawing for one of 10 Durango Joe's gift cards!
